Creating a Google Form

Dilbertian · 13/08/2025 17:53

I'm creating an application form in Google Forms, to be used by a person applying on somebody else's behalf. I want to use the answer to one question in asking subsequent questions.

Eg

Q1: What is the applicant's name?
A: Dilbert

Would be followed by

Q2: What Dilbert's favourite colour?

Rather than by

Q2: What is the applicant's favourite colour?

I can't figure out how to do this. Anyone know the solution?

I don't think you can do that in Google Forms. You might be able to do something like it in Microsoft Forms, or try using another tool like Typeform, Jotform, Formstack, or SurveyMonkey, depending on what you're using it for. Good luck!

I'm rapidly going off Google Forms. The Excel sheet it generates for the results is absolutely awful.

Suppose I shouldn't moan about a free product LOL.

Thanks for the suggestions of other products.

Found this on Google which may work as you are quoting the entire answer to "What is the applicant's name?
Google Forms does not offer a direct feature to quote a specific part of a previous answer within a question. However, you can achieve a similar result using Google Help's answer piping feature or conditional logic with sections.Answer piping allows you to insert the full answer from a previous question into a later question using QX_ANSWER notation, where X is the question number. Alternatively, you can use conditional logic to direct users to different sections of the form based on their answers, effectively creating different paths for different responses.

Methods to achieve similar results:

  1. 1. Answer Piping:
  • In Google Forms, when setting up your questions, you can use the format QX_ANSWER within the text of a later question, where X is the number of the previous question.
  • When a user answers the first question, the answer will be automatically inserted into the question using QX_ANSWER.
  • For example, if Question 1 asks "What is your favorite color?", and Question 2 says "I like the color Q1_ANSWER", the user's selected color from Question 1 will be displayed in Question 2, according to Google Help.
  • This method inserts the full answer, not a specific part.
  1. 2. Conditional Logic (Sections):
  • You can use sections in Google Forms to create different paths based on answers.
  • For example, you can create a section that appears only if a user answers a particular question in a specific way.
  • Within those sections, you can then add questions with customized wording based on the section they are in.
  • This method allows you to tailor the follow-up questions based on the user's previous answer, but it requires setting up multiple sections.
Example:

Let's say you have these questions:

  1. What is your favorite color? (Options: Red, Blue, Green)
  2. You chose {Q1_ANSWER}. Why do you like that color? (This uses answer piping)
If a user selects "Red" for Question 1, Question 2 will display: "You chose Red. Why do you like that color?" If you want to tailor the follow-up even more (e.g., different follow-up questions for "Red" vs. "Blue"), you would need to use sections and conditional logic.

Answer piping - Google Surveys Help

In multi-question surveys, it's sometimes convenient to quote a user's answer to an earlier question. This is called answer piping. You can use this feature by including a word in the format of QX_AN
