Windows ?

in right hand corner of toolbar at bottom of screen there should be an icon, grey diamond with green arrow above, to click on then you stop whichever device is shown.

Are you on a PC or a Mac? If you are on a PC move your curser to the menu at the bottom of the screen on the right hand side.

Find the symbol called "Safely remove hardware" select your memory stick and stop, then you can safely remove it. If you are on a MAc drag your memory stick icon to the trash can and it will eject it automatically. HTH

Do what McDreamy and LIZS say, to be on the safe side, but I was told by a techie type that so long as you have saved your work nothing bad will happen if you just take it out without 'safely removing'

Kevlarhead · 14/05/2008 10:17

If you're running windows Xp you don't need to press anything. Just yank it out.

Threadworm - DH always believed that till one day he unplugged his USB hard drive without ejecting it - next time he looked at his C drive in Windows explorer, it gave him a list of the external drive contents instead (even though it wasn't actually plugged in). Gave him quite a shock!
I suggested he put the external drive back & then eject it properly & everything returned to normal. He now always ejects first!

BigTech · 15/05/2008 10:30

I would suggest always ejecting external devices before removal, especially if you do not want to loose data. It takes an extra 30 seconds but can save you hours of lost work.

I knackered my first IPOD by just unplugging it . Fortunately I just needed to re format it and it worked again. Always eject!!
