i just ran a free keylogger scan, I do have (as I suspected when I ran it) a keylogger.

Now, this is either viral or the ex has installed it. I need to get rid of it. I think the ex has installed it to be honest. He blew up 2 weeks ago about me "Meeting men and shagging then" (wtf?) and I passworded my computer, but too late it seems.

I need to get my photos and windows xp off this computer and onto a disc, then wipe this computer and put what I want back on.

What do I need to do? Can this be done?

I don't know because I ran a spyware check and destroyed everything (apparently) and now I don't know how to get back to it.

I feel like smacking my own fingers sometimes.

They had names like C drive mozzilla firefox cache type things.

instal CCleaner as well. It deletes loads of stuff from your pc - we use it to clear caches etc to save memory

colditz · 10/05/2008 16:49

I'm scared to do that in case I delete something I need, because I really don't know what I'm doing.

they sound like internet cashed files. are you using firefox?

colditz · 10/05/2008 17:06

I am, yes. I nly looked because the scanner thing pointed me tyowards them!

ok well it sounds as if they're internet cashes. Now it's entirely possible that they're just files that have been cashed from your internet options. I'm not familliar with firefox, but if you look at your internet options, there should be an option that tells you how long internet history is saved for, if at all.

Did the scan come up with any additional spywear and if so did it tell you what it was?

lol I don't recognize most of what is running in my processes tab. it's all acronims or abreviations, and while I recognize some of it by the letters most of it could be anything as far as I know.

or you can google them and usually you will find an answer that way.

Agree with most of the above.. ...esp Kevlarhead. Get ESETs NOD32 but the version that does the spyware/virus/spam/etc protection.

With the exception of well known products like AVG I have a built in scepticism around 'free' 'anything detectors'. We've seen instances of programs like keylogger detectors that just dump a ton of other spyware on you machine (but don't report it!) Apparently the machine I'm on has Spyware installed and has porn detected in Internet explorers cache - shame it's a Linux machine so both previous 'finds' can't possibly be true!!

As for securing your machine when it's clear - if you've got XP, just create a normal (not administrative) account for people to use (that aren't you!) - that way they have no rights to install anything on your machine.

Good luck.

There's no way he could be monitoring you from a different computer as well is there? Rather than just when he comes round to babysit?

My dad put a keylogger on my mum's computer and found laods of stuff out. But somehow the programme sent the info from her computer to his computer so he never had to actually use her computer.

Hope you sort it out.
