Help with a 2012 Mac and Microsoft Office

I have an older Mac I use just for personal stuff rather than work.
It can only update to macOS Catalina 10.15.7 as thats all Mac will support.
I need to upload MS Office to write letters etc, I haven't already got 'Pages" on there, and Mac don't support that on Catalina so I can't download that either.
I think I can upload MS Office 2019 (if I can find someone selling it still!) is that right?

What about OpenOffice ? Pretty sure it's a free one that probably has previous versions readily available ?

You can try downloading office from the App Store, and activate it as read only to see if it works.

Thanks @midgetastic that looks perfect for my needs.
@Dbank I can read word doc, but I want to be able to create my own documents too.

If it works, then subscribe to enable read / write. (£60 per year)

It didn't work, that's why I posted on here. The software isn't compatible with the operationg system I am stuck on because Apple stop supporting their hardware after a certain time frame, even though they work perfectly well. Unfortunately, additionally, possibly for good reasons, the software producers then don't include older operating systems when they develop their products.
I can't just buy a version or subscribe (which I do for my 'work' mac) hence this post which lead to Midget sorting my dilemma for me

Your could also use Pages / numbers etc, via iCloud.com in your browser (free)

Or use office 365, in a browser.

Very much depends on what you need office for.
