ACER laptops - are they any good?

The screen on my trusty Dell Inspiron 1300 has now gone really fuzzy and I'm going to have to bite the bullet and buy a new laptop. I think I need 2GB RAM and at least 160 MB memory. I mostly surf, do email and store and photoshop photos. It seems that ACER laptops are the cheapest make - does anyone know if they are any good? Many thanks in advance.

I'm typing on my second one right now and I've not had a problem so far (the first one just got too ancient so needed replacing, nothing wrong with it). I've never heard anything really bad about them either - they're not the lightest or thinnest out there but that's not the end of the world.

My Acer laptop is still up and running, it is 3 now and starting to get a little slow, but I have not had any problems with it.

Mine is going strong after nearly three years. Have you looked at reviews on amazon or dabs.com?

Crocky · 11/04/2008 19:43

Mine is also going strong three years on. It is used daily.

FrazzledFairyFay · 11/04/2008 19:45

I will have a look at amazon and dabs, thanks for that suggestion.

My laptop rarely leaves the sofa so no need for it to be particularly light, I just need to be able to fit it on my lap

I work in IT (my how thats a conversation killer) and acer laptops are absolutely fine if you pretty much just use them for web access and storage. TBH all hardware like that is pretty much if a muchness - it's all made the same way (apart from Dell actually, at least that used to be the case!).

Having said that I like my Vaio but thats just me being a geek

Anyway, I'm now going to carry on with the white paper I'm writing.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Thanks.

Oh help, I've now found a Toshiba that I like the look of, and am now completely confused!

My Acer is still going strong after 2 years, and it gets some pretty shabby treatment (dropped off the sofa arm, kicked off a chair etc). They are very good and better than dd's dell.

We have used Acers in the past at the junior school I work at - & most of them are fine but you get the odd one - I'd say three or four out of the 25 or so we've had - which is absolute cr*p. The last four we got, (which iirc are the 5120) were pretty cheap, but they have all had serious problems with shutting down unexpectedly, which seems to be due to Acer's own power management system - basically the thing goes into hibernation and when it wakes up again, the fan doesn't come on & it soon overheats.

The other big problem we've had is Acer's support - they now insist on dealing with it themselves rather than through a third party, & the last straw was having to send one particular machine back to Plym outh five times in a month - including twice when it came back with XP home on instead of XP professional.
So now we are looking at Toshibas too- or
possibly HP.

Which Toshiba are you interested in? I'm looking for a new laptop myself & I've seen a couple of Toshibas I like - I'm just trying to decide between a big screen for photos & films or a nice small one I can curl up on the sofa with....

I quite like the look of the Toshiba Satellite Pro A210-1B1. I just find it all such a mine-field

On my third (although I barely use it now I've got my shiny Mac) and the first and second are still working fine (but too slow).

My first one got absolutely battered travelling to London and back every day on the train but still boots fine, runs fine but looks as though it's due to be put out to pasture (4 years old after all!)

Definitely good value for money and excellent reliability. Just rolled a bunch of them out at work (yes that IS the correct collective noun if there are any lurkers from pedants corner!)

Geek over and out.

I used to do the IT purchasing at the place I used to work. Toshiba's are pretty good. IBM generally more reliable. Acer were cheaper and more reliable than both. I bought an Acer 2 yrs ago and it's had A LOT of abuse. It still functions with keys missing, a dodgy screen and a cracked case. DS has put it through it's paces. I'm currently using a new Dell as it was so cheap I couldnt turn it down.

My only recommended DON'T buy is HP. DH has them at work and he has no end of troubles with screen backlights and hard drive failures.

Dp has an Acer
He says to tell you "They are shit"

Alambil · 12/04/2008 00:27

I've had my Acer Travelmate 2410 since errr 2005; it's great. Daily use, travelled back and forwards to uni with me and been dropped more times than I care to admit - and has had DS playing on it too, hammering away at the keys!

It's brilliant - only cost around £300 in a Currys sale

Ambi · 12/04/2008 00:47

love mine, but hey I'm no expert, just a nice cheap laptop from Tesco. handles daily mning no problem!
