am a bit of a thicko with this stuff usually. I'd like to put some of our digital footage from our pc onto a dvd for my mum's bday - is this possible/straightforward? i think she has a standard dvd player (and no computer). thanks

Someone will probably be along who has a camera and does this exact thing all the time. (My files tend to arrive from elsewhere in a different format)

But in the meantime do you have Nero by any chance? or any DVD writing software at all

Also what filetypes would the files have now

There is a bewildering array of software depending on exactly where you're starting from and how you want it to end up. Some programs are free, some you pay for. Some can be used right away and some take time to learn.

Does this sound right - "intervideo media file"? We've got "Recordnow" - would that be any good? Thanks

i have used WINDOWS and ULEAD DVD

Windows Movie Maker which you should already have lets you import video files and clip bits off you don't want and rearrange them. you still need something else to write to DVD

I'm fairly sure RecordNow is music only.

I would recommend ConvertXtoDvd which should do it in one step if you don't need to clip bits off, but it's not free. You might try the free trial just to see how it works.

Ulead DVD which RTKangaMummy recommends also has a free trial.
