How can I make copies of kids dvds and videos on to dvd?

We have a few dvds (nemo etc) and a ton of videos.
I want to make copies of the dvds for grandma's/car player and make dvd versions of the videos.
DP says we don't need a 2nd cd player in the computer to do this as we have a programe that lets us copy music cds to upload them to his mp3 player and he claims that will work for dvds too.
Is he right? I can't stand the thought of us falling out if he is faffing about for hours over some nemo dvd!

And then there are all the videos. He says we can use cabling from video player to pc to copy them on to dvd. Has anyone done this? Is it a complete nightmare and will I have to unplug pc, take to the other room and set it all up by the tv/video?

I did look at the dvd/video combos for sale but buying one of those just to make dvds to take out in the car etc isn't a £££ option for us.

Any help gratefully appreciated!

DVD's and videos are copy protected, so any software you had would need to decrypt that protection. I'm sure you could find software to do that if you searched the web.

This is all possible, and is made easier with dedicated hardware - such as a DVD Recorder - but it is not legal to do with shop purchased videos. If it was your home video you had produced, that would be another matter... but with pre-recorded video tapes, the copyright holder has licensed that content only in that particular format.
