Are you working in Windows? Using the standard picture viewer?

Go to your My Pictures folder, find the pic you want, click on it and then look on the bit on the right of your screen and under File and Folder Tasks you will find E-mail this file. Click on that. You will get a little window asking you if you would like it compressed (or something), say yes or OK. You will then get a new e-mail window up with the file in the attachments slot. Select Save attachment under the File menu of the e-mail. If you only want to send one pic then send this e-mail. If you want loads of pix on one mail then close this e-mail.

It sounds complicated, but it's not. Once you've done one you can get seriously hooked (yes, I am that sad).

Repeat as many times as you need to until all the pix you want are compressed. Finally, create the e-mail you want to attach the pictures to and attach them.

I know this because I found out how to do it yesterday and spent HOURS compressing pix which I thought I might want to send sometime!

I found it helped if I created a new folder on the desktop, (which I called small pix) so I could find them easily.

I prefer to load them all onto Picasa web albums, make the album private and send people invitations.

I prefer it when people do this for me too, unless they send me a link to something with about 400 photos, many out of focus or several of their child from different angles with the same choc-covered mouth iyswim.

Sue - if I do that could my dad save the pics from picasa onto his PC if he wanted to use as desktop background or print?

Yes, it looks like it.

I just signed out of all my picasa/google stuff and used an invitation link to look at one of my photos. There is an option on the right hand side to Download Photo.

Picasa or similar is the best way forward for large photo albums (also take a look at the Mac stuff (here.

The problem with zipping photos is that they don't really compress by much if they're JPGs as the compression algorithms they use are pretty good anyway.

You can also use Picassa to make the pictures smaller. Select the ones you want and then click File > Export Picture to Folder... Then choose the resize option and go for something like 800. Then you can add them to an e-mail and they should be much smaller. If your dad wants a bigger one to use as wallpaper he can tell you which one and you can send just that one to him full size.
