They are both on-line wirelessly - can I use files from the other computer?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 15/03/2008 20:43

OK - I might have worked out the problem

When I set up a wireless network it asks me to put my USB stick into my router......before putting it into the other computer my rounter doesn't have a USB port

Help?

I never used that method myself, but if both computers can get online they must be already set up right for the internet. In which case you may not need to do that step at all.

And don't despair. They are ALWAYS difficult, but that makes it all the more of a triumph when you beat it

Since I don't use wireless myself I'm going by my memory of setting a friends up some time ago. She's out tonight, but if you haven't solved it by tomorrow I'll check her setup to see what we're missing.

btw if you go to MY Network Places it should show the shared folder you just made (but probably not the one on the other computer)

KatyMac · 15/03/2008 20:57

It does

Well I did that right anyway

OP posts:
KatyMac · 15/03/2008 21:03

Thanks - I think you will need to speak to your friend

I feel so silly

Two possibilities to try out when you get a chance.

-------

  1. If you're using Windows Firewall go to Control Panel - Windows Firewall and open it. Either turn it off for now (on both PCs) to test it or click on the Exceptions Tab (at the top) and see if it has an entry for file and printer sharing and if it is ticked -------
  2. In Control Panel open Network Connections Inside there should be two items

Local Area Network
Wireless Network (the name may vary a bit)

Right click Wireless Network and click Properties
Now you have a dialog box with a few items in a list which looks something like this ( again the names may vary a bit)

Client for Microsoft Networks
file and printer sharing for microsoft networks
Qos Packet Scheduler
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

If the "file and printer sharing for microsoft networks" is missing or unticked that would be a reason.

Stupid computer

I recommend that you only set up a share on a single PC and then use this as a 'server' device.. you can then connect to this from many other devices and move files up and dowm with ease

Setting up a network where all devices share with all other devices becomes very confusing and opens you up to attacks by viruses

KatyMac · 16/03/2008 19:26

OK - now you are on all my problem computer threads

OK how do I do this?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 16/03/2008 20:01

Aw - you went away

OP posts:
Greyriverside · 16/03/2008 20:54

It will be some trivial setting in the end, but need more information to pin it down.
For example if I do ipconfig on this PC this is what I get

Host Name ........................: greypc
Primary Dns Suffix ..............:
Node Type ........................: Unknown
IP Routing Enabled................: No
WINS Proxy Enabled................: No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Description ......................: SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adter
Physical Address..................: 00-01-CC-DE-C0-D0
Dhcp Enabled......................: Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled ........: Yes
IP Address..........................: 192.168.1.30
Subnet Mask ......................: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway ..................:192.168.1.254
DHCP Server ......................: 192.168.1.254
DNS Servers ......................: 192.168.1.254
Lease Obtained....................:16 March 2008 14:42:25
Lease Expires ....................: 19 January 2038 03:14:07

Yours will say Wireless adapter not ethernet and will be a different model.

Hostname is just the name of the computer, but it needs to have one.

Default Gateway, DHCP Server and DNS Servers are all the same IP number because that's just the IP of the router.
IP address has the same first three numbers, but the last number (30 in this case) distinguishes this PC from any others on the network.

KatyMac · 16/03/2008 20:56

Actually the old computer has stopped going on-line now - I think I will have to do a system restore

Is it dangerous posting your IP address?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 16/03/2008 21:21

What's a DNS cache?

& how do I clear it?

OP posts:
nannynick · 16/03/2008 21:31

Start, Run
cmd
ipconfig /flushdns

DNS is to do with domain names, resolving a name (like mumsnet.com) to an ip address.

KatyMac · 16/03/2008 21:35

I googled it & got a fix apparently it's a common error & the flush thingie won't work you have to type something long & reboot

Fingers crossed

I was re-booting & it wanted to do an update

OP posts:
KatyMac · 16/03/2008 21:50

Well that is fixed but the sodding thing still won't go on-line

OP posts:
nannynick · 16/03/2008 22:16

Would it be easier if I just come up and see you? Never know may be able to fix it. Alas can't come till Good Friday at earliest.

Check the IP addresses of each machine.
I would tend to set things up as:

Router: 192.168.2.1
PC1: 192.168.2.2
PC2: 192.168.2.3

KatyMac · 16/03/2008 22:19

I'll take you sailing?

Hmm I envisage a really odd conversation with DH

"You know those people I talk to on the internet?"
"What your MN people"
"Yes well one of them is a man called NannyNick & he's coming to stay to fix the computer........"

Hmm?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 16/03/2008 22:20

OK
I have restored old computer to pre - setting up network days

& I have deleted the network for the new laptop

Shall I connect them with a cable & see if I can network them?

OP posts:
nannynick · 16/03/2008 22:21

Bank Holiday Monday - local travelodge has a room available. I could then just pop in for coffee on Tuesday 25th!

nannynick · 16/03/2008 22:23

No, get the old system working first so that it is connecting to the internet.

Then get the new laptop to connect to the internet.

Get it to that stage, then you could just e-mail files back and fourth!

nannynick · 16/03/2008 22:28

Oh something to try:

Right click on MY COMPUTER and click Properties
Click tab COMPUTER NAME
look at what the WORKGROUP name is.
set each PC to be on Exactly the same WORKGROUP name.

KatyMac · 16/03/2008 22:28

Don't pop in for coffee on the 25th - we will be at Papworth hospital for the day

Both pewters are on the net & working

I would like to network them then I can work upstairs away from the children while accessing the files on the other pewter

OP posts:
KatyMac · 16/03/2008 22:30

OK now they have the same workgroup name (computer is restarting

OP posts:
KatyMac · 16/03/2008 22:31

Which travelodge Acle? - I wouldn't stay there

OP posts:
nannynick · 16/03/2008 22:31

So lets start again... now that both have an internet connection, are they both wireless and getting their net connection from a wireless router?
