WiFi - modem change

Our modem was pre-historic and our provider installed a new one the other day.

Can you please help me compile a list of gadgets that will need to be reset with the new WiFi code? I've got a list but can you think of anything I've missed.

Phone
Tablet
Laptop
Desktop computer
Printer
Tv
Fire stick
Ring doorbell
smart meter?

Have I missed anything?

Thanks

Without being in your house, no one can know, but do you have any smart household appliances? Work kit as well as home kit?

Smart meters are generally on the mobile phone network so won't need the new wifi code. If you have Hive or similar that will need resetting

Anything that's suddenly stopped working.

You could of course log into the new modem and set the Wi-Fi Name (AKA SSID) and password to the same as the old modem, then all the old devices would automatically reconnect.

I would expect your steps to be :

  1. Connect to new Modem with the NEW SSID and Password.
  2. Access the interface page on the modem
  3. I would expect the address to be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1
  4. Find and enter the Admin credentails printed on the modem
  5. Find the option to rename the wifi (SSID) and password on the modem (might need a bit of hunting about)
  6. Click okay and wait for it to reboot.
  7. I would then expect everything to reconnect to the modem now it's using the "old" SSID and password.

P.S. Alternatively you could take the opportunity to start again with a new name and password and manually reconnect all of your devices. (SSID "Dunroaming" password name of first pet etc. i.e. something easy to remember and share.

P.P.S if you get in a pickle with the new modem, you should be able to reset it to factory default by pressing the reset button till the lights flash / go off, usually 5-10 seconds.

You could also check what devices connect to your old modem quite easily.

  1. Power up old modem
  2. (wait 10 minutes for it to boot and the devices to connect)
  3. Connect your phone / laptop to the old network
  4. Use an IP scanner to "see" what devices have connected to the network.

For example use the "IP Scanner" app on an iPhone.

This should most all of the devices that are on the net, but some may not display their names, only their IP address (EG. 192.168.0.123)

If something doesn't appear that you think should be there, try power cycling the missing device, it might reconnect.

I always just rename my new modem (changing contract every 18m to 2 years for the best price) to the old modem name. My modem is still BTHub.... despite not having been with BT for years.

Last time I couldn't work it out, and started to go down the route of changing logins on all devices, but gave up when I couldn't reset the robovac and persevered with changing the modem name!

This is genius!!

Another option if you can afford it is to set a tp-link deco network around £100, it adds 3 wifi transmitters, with a cool app, that you can see whos online, block or restrict bandwith, and when you change your modem just connect the new modem to the main deco
