I've looked but can't see one, surely there ought to be?

like this ° you mean?

I have a continental keyboard, so don't know where it is on a qwerty keyboard

aDad · 28/02/2008 12:02

Dont think so°

ktpie · 28/02/2008 12:02

I've never found one, in word I use superscript and an o.
I'd be interested to know if there was another way with a qwerty keyboard - that would work out of word!

Mercy · 28/02/2008 12:02

You can copy it from character map

aDad · 28/02/2008 12:03

i copied and pasted that from word. dont think my keyboard has one, although there is bound to be some nifty short-cut key

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 28/02/2008 12:03

hmmm

thanks anyway

smartiejake · 28/02/2008 12:04

it's on the "insert" then "symbols" but you can assign a key to it there is an option on insert symbols for this I think (IN WORD)

winestein · 28/02/2008 12:05

Yes there is - go to Insert then Symbol. It's there just under the alphabet at the top on the far right.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 28/02/2008 12:07

Ah I copied and pasted it from your posts so managed to do what I needed. thankyou.

If you hold down the Alt key and type 0176 you'll get one - there's a whole range of symbols, foreign letters etc available that way

°

They are all here - it's a godsend

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 28/02/2008 12:13

ooh thankyou

Num Lock has to be on for those (mine is always on anyway so I tend to forget that bit)

WendyWeber · 28/02/2008 12:15

Oh, and you have to use the numeric keypad, not the ones across the top (so if you have a laptop I think you'll be out of luck, because they don't have one? Again I always use the numeric keypad so I forget that too)

winestein · 28/02/2008 12:18

It's much easier to use INSERT > SYMBOL (unless there is a character you use all the time and know the code off the top of your head).

ktpie · 28/02/2008 12:19

Brilliant! That list looks really useful.

WendyWeber · 28/02/2008 12:47

tis good, isn't it, ktpie?

winestein, I have no idea where INSERT > SYMBOL is/are to use them!

(Am total technonumpty - for your average technonumpty, my little list is actually much easier even if it is slooooow)

winestein · 28/02/2008 12:59

Lol Wendy

In Word, look at the top menu bar (you have FILE, EDIT, VIEW and then INSERT (followed by a few more)
Press INSERT to get the drop down menu and "symbol" is on that list. Click on symbol and a box comes up with all the symbols/characters in it - you just scroll through until you see the one you want.

In the symbols box there is a tab called "special characters" too and if you select that you get the trademark and copyright signs etc.

There's so much to Word. It's incredible! I found all about bookmarking and cross referencing on Mumsnet and now I have a standard report template for my work where I only have to type half the things I used to have to!

WendyWeber · 28/02/2008 13:10

Ooooh, winestein, thank you - have found it now - that is AMAZING!

It has Hebrew and Arabic and music and Cyrillic and Greek and all sorts of fascinating symbols (shame I probably won't ever need any of them )

WendyWeber · 28/02/2008 13:11

(All I ever do with Word is type or copy and paste, and I keep hearing how fantastic it is, I really should do a course to get more out of it!)

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 28/02/2008 13:31

Ah I don't use word thats why I was confused. DH refuses anything microsoft related in this house.

Oh, have you not got Windows either then, TDWP? You will need this page which has Mac alternatives.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 28/02/2008 13:52

Not mac either, we have fecking linux at the moment. It's a pita there is little choice.

I have xp on my laptop though.

Is that HTML bit any use then? Or does your laptop have a numeric keypad? Or will one of the other bits work for you?

(What is Linux?)
