if so, is it suitable as a lone home computer for people who mostly store photographs and use itunes (and mumsnet of course)

thanks

no good for itunes as it run linux and not Windows or MAC OS... also only has a 4GB storage drive so you wont be able to put much more than a DVD's worth of data on it...

Pay a bit more and get yourself a proper PC... this is a nice toy.. or good for someone surfing the web...

how sad! i do like the idea of bypassing microsoft and having a pc that boots up really quickly and just does what i need.

thanks!

get a MAC

GeekBoy · 18/02/2008 17:35

beat me to it OD... ;-)

i would only move away from the whole microsoft pc thing for 2 reasons

  1. affordability
  2. feeling like i am opting out of the crazy world of over functionality

don't think mac really meet the bill.

yes I have one
but it isn't my main laptop. I stick it in my handbag if I need to check or send email messages on the move, or if I know I have eg 2 hrs to kill in starbucks and want to make it productive, I put photos on it to show eg grannies their grandchildren, I take it on holiday if I want the ability to check email but not lug a full scale laptop. for that it is great.
the fact that it is linux means it can't do eg itunes, but it makes it v fast start up etc and I don't worry about viruses.
storage is 4GB but a new 8gb one is out and you can double the storage iwth a 4mbflash memory. it has 4 usb ports. I actually don't store much on it but if I need to work on documents or want to take photos etc with me I just download from my main machine onto a flash memory stick and bob's your uncle. actually it also has an sd slot which is what I use for photos, but you get the idea

I think it is great

also fantastic for kids because it is unbreakable and v instinctive to use and has some nice eg maths games on it.

for £220 I think it is fantastic as a secondary machine, would rather have that than a blackberry personally.

PrincessPeaHead · 18/02/2008 17:42

sorry 3 usbs not 4

SheherazadetheGoat · 18/02/2008 17:44

it does sound great. i have a 'proper' laptop for work and a creaking pc at home. but the itunes thing is a deal breaker.

yes it isn't a main computer
but it is lovely

Point has been made above.. this is a great toy but wont work as a primary device...

I hate asus, wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. I have a laptop by asus, two years old, falling to bits. Half the stuff on it doesnt work, they keyboard is knackering out, bits are falling off, the camera lno longer works. It wasn't cheap neither, it was supposed to be nearer the top of the range and cost £1400.

You can do most of the things listed here on an itouch! I use that for checking emails and surfing the net on the go.

it's perfect for surfing MN whilst breastfeeding for ages in the wee hours, but I wouldn't have it as a sole computer. Great for wireless internet/email - it goes with me to many places in the nappy bag since it is so small.
