So random but me and DP got into a deep convo about this the other day and it was so interesting.

What do you reckon??

OP posts:
ChampagneCommunist · 28/03/2023 20:06

Slow & gradual extinction. No Hollywood-worthy exciting ending

tulipsandteacups · 28/03/2023 20:10

@ChampagneCommunist interesting...!!! Do you think there will be another era after humans have died out?

OP posts:
Farmageddon · 28/03/2023 20:12

Do you mean human civilisation, or the planet? It's supposed to be sucked into the exploding sun in a few billion years, but we won't be around to see it

We will die out long before the planet succumbs, which is why I find it interesting when people say 'save the planet' - the planet will be fine, it just won't be habitable for us or animals.

We will fight amongst ourselves over resources and lack of habitable land due to rising sea levels etc. Rich people will fare better.

ChampagneCommunist · 28/03/2023 20:17

I agree with @Farmageddon, we'll go long before the planet does.

The sooner humans are extinct the sooner the planet will recover

KnickerlessParsons · 28/03/2023 20:20

Does anyone think we'll ever colonise Mars, or the moon? As in have people living their whole lives there, going to school and work and to the shops etc?

Beenaboutabit · 28/03/2023 20:27

Human civilisation will collapse after nuclear war but that might allow the rewilding of the planet and multiple geological epochs to come and go before the planet is sucked into the giant sun as PP said above
But don’t fret about things beyond your control- enjoy your life and seize the day

LaurieFairyCake · 28/03/2023 20:34

Billions will die in nuclear/climate disaster within 20 years

Those left will carry on and repeat the same mistakes

Because we're fucking twats Hmm

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/03/2023 20:36

Who knows? Really.

The big contenders are global warming, and the attendant horses of the apocalypse. But a mutated plague, asteroid or super-volcano are in the running.

Should be fun finding out.

How soon?

Your really think nuclear war could be that imminent?

How soon?

If you live in Bangladesh or sub-Saharan Africa. Right now and for the last few decades.

dreamofalightahead · 28/03/2023 20:49

@MrsTerryPratchett how soon for 'us'

So I mean British people etc

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/03/2023 20:56

You could argue that some of the issues with immigration are actually the start of it. Immigration from many places is driven by climate change and conflict. Everyone heads to less impacted places and those places start to worry about resources.

It's just a dog whistle now, but it's coming. The Debt Boomerang by Susan George is an oldie but a goodie on this. It's about how 'Third World Debt' bounces back onto the First World. The same can be applied to climate change. The planet is a system and things like drug trade, deforestation, weather, immigration and war affect us all.

Pinkishpurpleyblue · 28/03/2023 21:00

Ooh i have no idea but I'm place marking for the theories!

Beenaboutabit · 28/03/2023 22:09

Your really think nuclear war could be that imminent?

Putin is popping some in Belarus. North Korea keeps testing. Israel has them. Saudi and Iran have signed an agreement that seems like they will be pooling resources for nuclear development because, you know, Israel. Russia opting out of nuclear treaty. It’s only a matter of time. I wouldn’t say imminent but it’s on the cards and proliferation makes it all the more likely - but if it’s inevitable or outwith our control, it’s better to ignore it and crack on with living

AlwaysLatte · 28/03/2023 22:15

Jesus, I don't know but I'm going back to the post about the house bunny!!

LondonLovie · 28/03/2023 22:24

Naaaa I think a mega virus will finish off the humans. If we don't die of fall scale nuclear war first. Hopefully it's a virus as it'll leave the earth in a better state to recover before the very end of time

Workinghardeveryday · 28/03/2023 22:28

Virus, nuclear or meteor

iamrageohtheresakitty · 28/03/2023 22:35

Not with a bang, but with a whimper

LatteOneShotplease · 28/03/2023 22:36

I think that the human race will die out in a lingering manner; there is a video called 22After on Vimeo that fictionalises it very well. And gloomily.

We, humans, are certainly trying to cut off the branch we are sitting on - but I hope that Mother Earth does survive us. One of the most (ridiculous) chilling films of recent times, "Knowing", had an end scene that was so depressing that I refuse to look at it again. I doubt though, and hope, that it was not portentous.

BasicDad · 29/03/2023 00:59

Yes we'll colonise Mars at some point. Unlikely terraform it in any meaningful way in the next 500+ years, if ever. Going to Mars and uncovering it's history is important, even it seems a bit sci-fi.

The moon will almost certainly be used as a bus stop for solar system travel, and manufacturing off earth. People will live there for short stints.

We'll probably even end up mining raw materials from relatively nearby asteroid belts.

I reckon the human race has got at least another 50,000+ years to run, notwithstanding any kind of species ending asteroid. Even then we'll probably survive and thrive again. We'll survive more world wars, and even partial nuclear decimation. Humans are way too resilient.

We won't even fully run out of space, as population growth will eventually slow down once the third world becomes more developed. We'll probably start to live naturally to 120 years+, and finally be able to turn back the clock and live lives of 1000s of years.

It's possible we may end as a species as we know it, as we move more towards technology augmentation. Sounds a bit Borg, but we're already 1/4 the way there.

Abyss23 · 29/03/2023 01:07

"The world" won't end, it'll carry on just fine long after humans are wiped from the face of it. We're insignificant in the grand scheme of things. The earth will do much better without us anyway.

Riapia · 29/03/2023 07:48

In 5billion years the sun will have used up all of its hydrogen.
It will become a red giant star and swell beyond the orbits of the inner planets.
whatever beings are there at that time will be as different from us as we are from the first single celled creatures.
Evolution.

DomesticShortHair · 29/03/2023 07:57

Death Star.

Rayn22 · 29/03/2023 14:23

So how long do you think humans have left on earth? I reckon 3 to 5 thousand years!
