Do I ditch my virgin media package?

Sakura03 · 01/02/2023 17:04

I have been with virgin media for 4 years since I moved and if it wasn’t for the price I would just carry on, the prize recently went up to £73 so I phoned to cancel and was offered an 18 month contract with no changed to my tv package or broadband speed for £47. However, I don’t use the tv package as I’ve got Netflix and prime it’s really just the Wi-Fi. I occasionally work from home, stream films, use social media and using it for internal calls. There is just me and a 5 year old in my household. I could do with saving a bit of money but not sure which provider to go with as I don’t understand the speed, for instance Now broadband is 11Mb for £18, Shell is similar Talktalk also 11 Mb but for £24.95. Three is £20, I have three mobile contact and cover is good. I’m pulling my hair out…Any suggests please? TIA

Following as I’m also looking at ditching Virgin. Sure, it might be fast but it’s £51 a month and I don’t need the speed for YouTube, the newspapers and a bit of mumsnet.

Sakura03 · 01/02/2023 17:17

Internal calls🤣 should say international calls…

Can you not just cancel tv and keep broadband. I'm assuming if you have virgin landline you may need to swop that with BT as I thought all other providers worked off a BT line

I'm looking into this. Price isn't much different to keep the basic tv package. I think it was £35vs£43 from memory.

Sounds like you have been paying way over the odds for a long time if they can suddenly slash your contract rate. If you are accessing Netflix and prime from your tv streaming apps rather than the virgin Tivo box then I'd look to ditch them.

I only really watch tv on demand these days so I pay £23pm for Sky broadband with a 60 Mbps guarantee. (It's cheaper to take it with a landline which I don't use at all) and then choose the streaming apps I want and when I want to use them.

I'm currently using Netflix but will dump them later this month. I bought Disney+ with an annual discounted pass for £20. I'm a Prime member so benefit from Prime Video FOC and will subscribe to Discovery+ for another month and that's it currently.

Don't forget Virgin will increase the contract rate during your 18 month term by the rate of inflation as well.

I like to record stuff to watch when I want to & I work odd hours, so I'm not regularly at home to watch things when they're broadcast. I don't know how else to do that without my Tivo box (or a Sky box).

I could do with a Tivo box with a bigger capacity- minds always at 100% 🙄🙄

Guavafish1 · 02/02/2023 03:18

I pay £17 per month for just virgin broadbrand internet 100mbp. I was paying £27 before and threaten to leave. They lowered it down to above price.

Shamoo · 02/02/2023 03:37

We moved from virgin to BT broadband -£22 a month and excellent speed.

thirtysixpercent · 02/02/2023 04:39

I'm with Sky and recently reviewed my package (which was creeping up past the £60 mark). I was about to ditch it but they offered me fibre optic broadband, Sky Q, landline and basic TV package for £25 per month. As I never watch or record live TV I also cancelled my TV licence, so all in all saved around £40 a month.

weathervane1 · 02/02/2023 04:47

I'm with NowTV. £21 a month for super fibre - we're getting around 78 MBS. The package includes free line rental, anytime calls and unlimited calls with the exception of premium rate numbers.

GG1986 · 02/02/2023 05:05

Following, as my virgin is going up to £63 a month!

@WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody
you could buy a Freeview DVR and you would then be able to record any Freeview content like this one:

QuizteamAguillera · 05/02/2023 01:19

I got rid of them last year when they hiked the prices up,I’d been with them for years!

I’m now with Community Fibre and now pay £25 for 1000mb. It’s so reliable and never drops out. They’re only in London though.

WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody · 05/02/2023 08:48

@throwaway5001 thank you, I'll have a look into it.

rumred · 05/02/2023 08:52

I have virgin broadband. It's very fast. Was planning to cancel last year, rang them and they dropped it to £15 a month. I happily stayed with them.

So at least give them a call, and have the figures for the other comparable services to hand. They may well slash your bill

Sakura03 · 18/02/2023 20:45

Just to update - I called Virgin back to say that I really couldn't afford the package even though they'd lowered the price to £47. They then looked at it again and offered the package at £44, however, I decided that I would be fine with broadband only which they could offer me at £30 a month. I've still got a few days to ponder as I know other providers do cheaper deals but I'm a bit scared to go with another company in case the cover/speed isn't as good...

I have brilliant broadband, g-fast, no Tv package or phone for £65 a month with a company no one has ever heard of. I love them. worth it for broadband that is 99% reliable as I work from home.

yoshiblue · 21/02/2023 12:03

@Sakura03 I'm going to look to my package with Virgin as it's gone from £28pm up to £42 in Jan then another £9 in April!

Does broadband only for £30 need a landline or can they do it without one now?

Gooseysgirl · 21/02/2023 12:09

We are fed up with all the bullshit negotiation/saying we're leaving etc etc we have to keep doing with Virgin every time they try to increase the price... so having been with them for 8 years we are finally jumping ship to Community Broadband which has just come to our local area.

How long did it take to get hold of them? I've been putting off having this conversation for a while years Blush

Mumof1andacat · 21/02/2023 12:22

Cancel the TV but keep the broadband and landlines if you still need it. I imagine you have a smart TV. They is so much to watch on bbc iplayer, itv x etc and you have Netflix so the TV package is redundant

TheAdmiralAndFishermanFavorEntirelyDifferentPies · 21/02/2023 12:42

Last time i had the leaving conversation- which was 3 hours of being on hold and passed around - they said they couldn't better the price that I was on as a legacy deal. Even though as a new customer I could have got a better customer for £25 less. Now I need to have the same conversation again but I can't face another 3 hours of utter bullshit from them.

Sakura03 · 01/03/2023 14:06

So I noticed they had sent me the £30 pre contract as well as a pre contact for £46! I called virgin and it took forever to explain the issue, in the end I asked that they just cancelled as I had had enough. The call handler apologised as his colleague had clearly made an error and eventually got it sorted for me and the broadband deal will now cost me £28 a month!
