Dp has an important deadline and his laptop is playing up and he needs info from the net. Will my laptop get infected with his virusey stuff if he uses one of his memory sticks to transfer info from mine to his? Or should he go and buy a new memory stick to avoid cross contamination? Or am I being paranoid and silly?
I have lots of work on and desperately need my pc this week and can't afford for it to get ill. Help please?

IMHO I would get a NEW memory stick and then get the info from yours and put it on his

NOT from his to yours

redadmiral · 27/01/2008 12:32

Agree with RT. You could maybe burn him a cd or dvd with the stuff on instead. Nothing from his to yours till his is cleared.

Carmenere · 27/01/2008 12:37

Ok thanks, so He could save info onto some blank dvd's?

because we have some of those but a memory stick would mean going into town iyswim

Yes should be able to

As long as your computer has a DVD writer

Good luck

Let us know if it works ok

Cheers, I will let him on in a moment. Isn't it funny how reluctant you can feel about allowing someone else into your laptop, it is a bit like your handbag

If you have dvd burning software on your machine, he can look up his info on yours, and then burn it onto a dvd to take to his. Is that what you mean? Maybe he can download a virus checker from the web and put it on a dvd to try to fix his (I'm getting to the limits of my knowledge now... I think we use AVG which is free, but I don't know if it does trojans.)

Basically viruses are designed to travel form one machine to another via disks (including writable cds and dvds), networks and usb keys.

X posted with RT. I flipping HATE DP doing anything with my PC, even though he is really techie and I have to ask him to do stuff. Last time he 'tidied' up my icons and deleted something I really wanted.

Our PC has been playing up and we keep getting pop ups re 'trojan' virus, but we have run our own viral check (norton) and its saying we are clear.

We think this could be a scam as the pop ups are recommending that we buy something called 'Malware' for protection.

BigGitDad · 27/01/2008 21:12

Serin I had that on my work laptop and downloaded this programme www.prevx.com/antimalware.asp They cleared the malware virus, They do a free sample for a month or so but I was impressed as it cleared the malware popups that I had come up, it also picked up viruses that my AVG was not picking up.
How did you get on at Nationwide by the way?

Carmenere · 27/01/2008 21:15

Oh thanks a million BGD malware is the one we are having problems with too.

If he can get email, SEND the info to him but there's little point in putting info on an infected PC - it may not work tomorrow!

Instead fix the problem. When you say you have a virus/trojan, what specifically is it that makes you think this. Has something been found by a virus checker - if so, what did it say? Perhaps it had a name?

If so, you want to look it up (try www.sophos.com to find out what the virus is, or google it's name and the work 'remove' or 'fix'.

Serin, there is an infection which causes adverts for software out there. Bloody annoyingly it was set up as part of legitimate websites and people downloaded it without realising. Easily fixable though. You need a firewall to prevent this sort of stuff really.

Or a Mac

Carmenere · 27/01/2008 21:37

I will do that wmmc, thanks a million

(temporarily hijacks thread)

Hi Big Great Dad!,

Well the Nationwide did offer us a deal but was no more favourable than our own lenders (Halifax), I don't know how it failed to be better as it looked okay on paper but when she worked out the repayments they were actually slightly more, and there was the hassle of completing medical forms and a house valuation!

In the end we just re-signed to the halifax for another 5 years and DH has quit smoking to help make up the difference.

The best bit about the new deal is that we get to take a mortgage 'holiday' after 3 months if things get really bad.

Thanks for your help.

BigGitDad · 28/01/2008 20:20

Be careful if you take the payment holiday, as the payments will be added to your mortgage!
