What can I do? It told me there was an update which I dutifully downloaded, then it told me my iPod was corrupt and that I might like to restore it. All my music's gone. What can I do?

Please help. If noone has any other ideas I'm going to have to reset it

Erm ... resync it from the itunes folder? As presumably that's how you downloaded the music on it in the first place?

lucykate · 13/01/2008 11:06

this has happened to dh about 3 times know, it automatically does this every time there is a software update. he has it all backed up so just reloads everything back on. he's out atm swimming with dd, but i'll ask him when he gets back if he's worked out a way to stop it happening again yet

pinkspottywellies · 13/01/2008 11:25

Oh arse. I've re set it now but I've lost all the music from it because I had it so it wouldn't sync and for some reason all my music disappeared a while ago.

Never mind. I'll just have to spend the next few weeks uploading all my music again.

Thanks

Make sure you set it up so it syncs in future as that's really how they are designed to work. Normally a "restore" will reformat and resync - but if you've set it to be "empty" that's the restore state it will revert to.

The whole point is that it shouldn't take weeks, all your music should be in your itunes directory and it should take a few minutes when you connect it to your PC

pinkspottywellies · 13/01/2008 16:54

Thanks rubber duck. It was in there but it all disappeared. I didn't have it set to sync because I had too much music on there to fit on the iPod.

Does anyone know if there's a way of importing songs from Windows Media player? That's where DH has put all our music so would be great if I could just move it.

There is a way...DH thinks there is an option move from in I tunes and then you can find them on your C drive????

The music isn't actually 'in' Media Player it'll be in a folder on your computer & Media Player just organises it. You should be able to search for music files on the computer, once you've found them, go to File on the itunes menu & click add folder to Library - it'll give you a dialogue box where you can browse to the music folder. Once your music's back in Itunes you can update your ipod.

RubberDuck · 13/01/2008 18:16

And you can still sync - what you do is set up a smart playlist with the maximum size (the size of your iPod!) you want to include in the music tab when your ipod is connected to the PC (or Mac).

I'm really cunning and have 3 playlists - all my 5 ratings, all my 4 ratings and a limited randomised selection of my non-rated songs. I also have podcasts and pictures uploaded on there. I only have a 4GB ipod and have about 17GB of music.

alternatively in iTunes you just untick the items you do not want to sync... you can then go a step further by displaying the duplicates and removing these.. this is how I do it and it means I can easily add/remove songs in the blink of an eye
