Please Help! Am tearing my hair out!! Burning video onto Cds problem...

Our old computer is running windows 98SE
Am trying to burn onto any sort of device some video of my 8 mth old daughter (who's now 2)..
We have lost the initial memory card so the footage I uploaded ages ago from our digital camera is our only record of her trying to stand up!

When I stick a memory stick in the back of the computer, it doesn't seem to even recognise it being there at all

Using Kodak recordable, rewritable disk...the damned thing keeps saying 'place a recordable disc in (Q)...which I am doing!!

Am now wondering whther it would record onto anything at all as it doesn't say DVD on the computer just 'compact disc rewritable recordable'..does this mean no video images can be transferred. Would hate to think we've lost the footage of dd for good..

sounds like your cd will record to CD not DVD which is what you would need if you were transferring vdieo over. can you email it to someone or put onto an image holding site (if such a one exists) for back up?

I tried emailing it but my email account said it was too large to send..is it possible to compress it do you think..how would I do this?

how big it the file?.. as per 'mumofmonster' are you using a recordable CD or a DVD as the DVD wont work?

spudcounter · 04/01/2008 13:28

okay...the file seems to be big cause it takes an age to upload and then my email a/c said it wouldn't email anuything over 5 sthg or other. I assume CDs won't record video images..am I right? I tried a recordable DVD in there but I don't think it's a DVD drive, only a CDrom drive (you can see that I am hopeless at this sort of thing).

I'm desperate to get this sorted cause otherwise I've lost some special footage of my dd at 8mths. These are the things I've tried to do so far and the failed results:

  1. Tried to put a recordable good quality DVD into the comp..result=kept saying 'put a recordable CD in'..(which I'm assuming won't record video? so it is useless)
  2. Tried to compress and send an email but doesn't seem to work
  3. Stuck in a memory stick and followed the instruction to download a driver from windows for 98SE..it's appeared as a icon on my desktop but the memory stick doesn't seem to connect...there's no flashing from it

Please help anyone...

...oh, and I've even tried uploading it on youtube thinking that someone might be able to download it from another computer and stick it on a memory stick or DVD..but youtube wouldn't even upload it..I think I remember it being 645MB (?)..it's less than 2 minutes longf, I'm sure

Does your digital camera still work with your computer? If so, maybe it is possible to use your digital camera as a storage device and copy the file back on to a new memory card.

Can't remember much about windows 98 but I am assuming that when you plug your camera in it will appear as a drive as it does in Windows XP. Just use the standard windows explorer interface to copy the file across. Obviously the memory card will need to be big enough - 1GB.

Once on the memory card, you can get someone else to read it onto their computer and make a DVD copy.

spudcounter · 05/01/2008 18:52

oh, can you copy things the other way around then? from a computer onto a digital camera? I didn't know this....
The camera still works on the computer (to transfer from camera to computer)though we needed to use a cdrom to put the canon software on the computer..I'll try it tomorrow. Thanks

I have a fuji camera that allows this. It looks like most Canon cameras also allow it. Try here and type in 19437 as the case id.

If you can't see an option from the canon software, just look for your camera in windows explorer. It should appear as a drive. Use the normal windows copy function to upload your file.

Create a backup of your file on your computer before doing this. Once copied, you should be able to plug the camera into somebody elses computer to transfer the file. It should also be possible to use a card reader if someone has one; maybe photo stores can even do it for you.

Good luck, I really hope this works as I know how precious video clips are.
