Converting those old VHS videos to DVD - ideas on product?

Our trusty old VHS player has finally packed up after years of stirling service. We've had a DVD player alongside it for several years. Before the VHS format becomes obsolete, I want to invest in a dual VHS/DVD recorder for ease of copying - I really don't want to throw away all our (mainly home-made!) tapes especially as so many of them are still being watched. I'm looking at the PHILIPS DVDR3512V/05 simply because the blurb says it's easy to record from one format to the other. I know I could do it more cheaply with a basic VHS player, but can't be done with all that cable-fiddling. (not very geeky I know )Does anyone have experience of this kind of product? Any turkeys to avoid? Thanks!

We have a Phillips 3320 dual video & it's pretty easy to do - but we've had it a couple of years so there's probably a better one out now.

One thing you need to check, especially if you have an older DVD player, is what format it records in - ours is +R/RW, but some older players will only play -R/RW - I think newer ones will play both.

Thanks for your reply, Eight - I think the new combi would play/record both formats, though our older DVD player can only handle +R/RW. From the product name, I suspect the model we are looking at is simply a more recent version of yours.

btw - We bought ours 2 years ago with exactly the same idea as you - and how many VHS tapes have we got round to copying so far?

Take a guess.....
