Roaming Charges on your mobile phone...be aware

I've just been listening to the BBC News and while this shouldn't come as a surprise following the UK leaving the EU, some of the mobile service providers will be introducing charges to use your mobile phone in Europe this summer and some won't.

There will be no charges on any service provider for UK phone users while they are in Ireland (so I guess that's something).

I don't understand why this is even news to be honest. I mean the UK is no longer part of the EU and doesn't get to benefit from any of the advantages of being in the EU (no roaming charges being just one) so why is this making it on to the BBC news???? The reporter on BBC Breakfast who was reporting this finished his piece by saying that pressure would be brought to the service providers who are introducing roaming charges.
I think, under normal business terms, if a service provider wants to introduce roaming charges, they should be free to do so.

What are your thoughts on this?

Just one more thing that the Brexit campaign tried to assure us wouldn't happen, but no remainer that I spoke to ever believed that for one second.

Filing it alongside the promises of £350m per week for the NHS, outstanding trade deals and controlling the borders, all of which are also going really well.

Also worth being aware that if you are travelling to mainland Europe by ferry, you need to remember to turn off roaming. If you forget, you will connect to all sorts of networks and it can be very expensive.

There are on actually 4 networks in the uk (O2, EE, Vodafone and H3G) all other providers piggyback on these networks. Only O2 haven't announced plans to introduce roaming. The article mentions Virgin - Virgin use the O2 network. If you are on a smaller network like Tesco/Asda/Giff Gaff etc, google the name of your network with 'what MVNO?' and it will tell you which network your provider uses.

Always check. We were in Andorra recently.. we would have been charged £6 a day, with both UK and Andorra being non EU and having no reciprocal agreement.

The joys of Brexit strike again - I switched from Vodafone to Talkmobile because Vodafone were re-introducing international roaming charges from the end of my contract.

Talkmobile use Vodafone's network but have a reasonable usage element when roaming abroad, was much cheaper and gave plenty of data (40GB) for less than a tenner a month for 12 months so quite a bit cheaper than the 'Basic' package the Vodafone offer which excludes roaming abroad. I could have paid to add roaming but stuff that.

Make sure you do your homework.

Ahh yes. The £350m per week. Any idea where it is, or do we assume all covid costs are fully covered???

@Popstarrrrr £350m a week NHS Brexit boost ?

Actually it has gone up, more than the £350m ….. but it didn’t come from Brexit savings, we’re paying more into Europe !
