Getting rid of sky q - what are my options?

So I'm getting rid of my sky q at the end of the month ( too expensive) what are my options now? I have a smart tv but the aerial is pants so the signal is weak
And keeps lagging 😡 I've looked at freesat but the box is nearly £200 for recordable etc

Do you need another box? If your smart tv is connected to the internet can you just make use of on demand and catch up services directly from the tv?

I have a 2019 Samsung tv and rarely ever use my BT box. I either use the built in apps like BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime, BritBox, Netflix or else I cast Eurosport and YouTube from my phone to the tv.

@TreePorcupine thank you for replying. Yeah I'm not sure if I need another box , was just wondering what my options were. I do watch a lot of Netflix etc so maybe I don't?

I've got smart TVs - I just use iPlayer/ITV Player/All 4 if I want to catchup terrestrial telly, along with Netflix and Disney+ through the smart tv apps and I have a tiny forty quid hard drive plugged in at the back to rewind and pause.

In theory you could stream all your live terrestrial TV from the apps, but in your position I'd probably get my aerial upgraded

You can watch live programmes on BBC, ITV and Channel 4 etc via the built-in apps.

Apart from recording programmes on to the hard drive in my BT box (which I rarely do these days as I simply catch up on the apps instead) I have no real need for a other box.

You can also use a streamer like Apple TV and Amazon Fire stick as well if you don't have a smart TV. As long as you have a decent internet connection you don't even have to worry about your signal strength from the aerial.

lardass88 · 26/10/2021 19:31

So how does a fire stick work? Does it stream live tv?

We usually watch live tv via the bbc iPlayer app on an Amazon fire stick instead of using the Humax box. We can do the same with any other app that also has real time streaming like ITV Hub.

Does the "pants" aerial have a signal booster?

FixTheBone · 27/10/2021 12:31

Will you be required to give your Sky Q box back?

In the past, Sky have never bothered asking me for their boxes back, and I've just used them as a 'dumb' freesat box to access live channels.

IIRC I needed to pay a tenner for a replacement card to put in the box.

lardass88 · 27/10/2021 13:50

No the pants aerial has no signal booster. May try that. And I think sky q ask for their boxes back

A fire stick streams to your TV using your wifi & internet connection

You can watch live/broadcast channels and also use apps such as iPlayer
(I’d recommend that you check the available channels as to whether they suit you)

I cancelled my sky Q last week, It was costing £57 per month. Yesterday Sky called me and asked me to go back, I am now getting exactly the same as I was but its now only £32 per month.

I would call and threaten to cancel and see what they offer you first :)
