Can anyone recommend a printer for home use (including teenagers) that doesn't cost a fortune in ink cartridge replacements?

If you can afford occasional big lump sums, laser printers are generally cheaper to run than inkjets but you pay a lot occasionally instead if frequent small to medium purchases.

My last set of compatible high capacity toners was £114 from Stinky Ink and that lasts around a year in our house. Original manufacturer's cartridges would cost more.

The upfront cost is quite high as well. The cheaper models seem to be at least £170 at the moment.

Most important factor is consumables.

We got a brother colour laser for our family of 9, purely on the basis it'll handle high volumes and a set of toners 3 colours and 2 blacks is about £30 for 2000 pages.

Got it from printer land for around £110 after £120 cashback which brother often offer.

We have an HP all in one printer. It scans, copies and prints. We use the scanning function far more than I ever anticipated. It's brilliant for creating PDFs of documents that I can email for insurance claims, sending copies of forms, etc. It's seven years old and has never given us a bit of trouble too.
