Is my Mac dying?!

Screen is flickering and there’s a 2.5 inch green bar running vertically down the screen. I’ve had it since 2017.

It’s well used, but recently really mainly for social media.

We have a shop round the corner I can take it to on Monday but I’m wondering if it means I’m going to need a new one!

Sounds like it might be a hard disc failure.

Have you been able to back up your machine before you take it to be repaired?

Polmuggle · 01/08/2021 17:31

That's a really short lifespan for a Mac. I've had my Air since 2013 and no issues with it. Would definitely look to get it repaired.

could be graphics or a display issue. I bought my MacBook pro in 2015 and its still going strong and much more powerful than the "brand new windows" laptop work foisted on me earlier this year.

I need a new screen ☹️

£600+ 😮

I think you need a second quote! My friend had her pro screen replaced for £200.

thumpingrug · 03/08/2021 21:47

yer, shop around. That sounds like Apples price. There are alternatives.

Well, a sad update - it wasn't the screen, but the logic board. In other words, it was fucked Sad

Ended up buying a new one, as it was cheaper than paying for the repair.

But I got £150 as a discount, and also another £70 for trading in my iPhone8 (I've just upgraded to a 12), so it wasn't too bad in the end.

(Well it was, but YKWIM!)

sorry to hear that. Macs usually last a lot longer than 3/4 years.

BIWI · 05/08/2021 09:25

Indeed. The guy at the Apple store did suggest I contact John Lewis, where I bought it from, to see if they would compensate me in any way. Something to do with consumer law and things being fit for purpose. I might try that - I have nothing to lose, I suppose!

The lifespan on new Macs is shocking. The older ones seemed to go forever - my 2012 is still going strong, my 2017 has been replaced once with logic board issues and it’ll go again.

BIWI · 05/08/2021 09:48

The first suggestion was liquid/water damage, but I'm 100% sure that hasn't ever happened. However, I have dropped it a couple of times, so that could have been the culprit Sad

Anyway, I now have a shiny new one. But don't know what to do with the damaged one - I'm reluctant to shell out another £800 to get it fixed, and I've been told by a repair company that I spoke to yesterday that they won't touch logic board replacements/repairs. Don't know if that's the case across the board though?

Sorry to hear you had to buy a new one! My Macbook Air 2013 is still going strong - meanwhile, my husband has had at least 3 PCs! I love a Macbook!!

Apple are infamous for their broke = replace attitude.
Also infamous for being VERY anti ‘right to repair’. They’ll sign component manufacturers up to exclusive deals so repairers can’t buy the components directly.
Still, they look good huh.

Insure your new one!!
