Hi,

Been researching projectors. We're not an overly techy family (basic tv, old xbox) but do like our films and games. So looking for something that will support both. Not looking to spend a shed load, but if the model at eg. £350 is significantly better than the £250 one then we would rather pay more. Budget is a concern and it doesn't have to be top of he range, but we don't want something that will pixellated or lag when playing games either.

Dooes anyone have any models to recommend based on personal experience?

In your budget, look at Optoma, BENQ and Epson

Use this calculator to work out positioning, it lets you work out the distance from where the projector sits to the screen and then the range of screen sizes that you can use, it also predicts the amount of darkness required and several other useful features.

If the projector is going to be much higher or lower than the centre of the screen, then optical keystone adjustment is desirable, most have digital keystone correction, which is much cheaper, but not as good.

Have a think about how the cabling is going to work, plus you need to have a think about sound - if you think the sound from a flatscreen TV is poor, projectors are generally awful, soundbar or a AV receiver / speakers maybe required sooner rather than later.....

Ive just done the calculations for the optoma HD143X (£380 from richersounds for my 4m room.

Mounted on the backwall the screen size is 137" but only 44nits brightness, which means only suitable for viewing in a properly darkened room - by comparison, my QLED TV is 800nits peak brightness, a typical computer monitor 150-300nits.
