So, long story short, we've stuck a massive extension on the back/side of our house and moved my mum (76) in.

She has her own lounge area (the garden room coz it sticks out into the garden) as our TV viewing preferences etc are v different! When it was built the electrician ran 2 data cables and a co-ax cable to the garden room from the main family area (where existing TV etc is). Mum's got a new smart tv and the virgin media engineer has installed an additional tivo box.

However, the WiFi doesn't reach the garden room. I've stuck the ends of the 2 data/ethernet cables into our virgin hub3 router - which runs to 2 wall sockets in the garden room. I've plugged the tivo box into one of them so it can update the channels etc, but obvs this doesn't transmit any WiFi.

The engineer said he would order a wifi booster, however another very long story short:
He didn't
The virgin website is a steaming pile of trash
See also phoning them to try to order one
I'm not even sure a wifi booster would work given how our extension is set up
It would be an extra £3/mnth on our package forever, just for 1 booster but I suspect it might take more than 1.

So - does anyone know of something I can just plug into the wall socket that's connected to our hub3 that will just transmit the wifi signal?

I've come across unmanaged access points in my research, but not sure if they need something else with them? Or if they're easy or difficult to set up? I'm not techphobic, can often figure things out, but also not exactly massively proficient.

Any advice? Mum, even though she's nearly 77, can't live without her ipad - keeps in contact with all her friends via Facebook, WhatsApp, Skype etc, and we'd both rather she is able to do it away from the main family room!

  1. tinyurl.com/y26jndpw. This is a TP-Link single wifi extender. £28 from Amazon. Works Ok but obvious the further away from the router signal the less effective it will be
or
  1. tinyurl.com/y2ha9ya7. A lot more expensive £150 TP-Link Mesh system, but in theory should eliminate dead spots around the house. It will need a bit of setting up (through an android app) but at least if it doesn't work you can send it back easily if purchased through Amazon.

I tried the tp link as above which helped, but then got extra mesh router thing from bt similar to the thing pp mentioned. It's solved my issue.

BT set on Amazon (tinyurl.com/y3ekjm28)
Interestingly, it's cheaper to buy the 4 pack at £99 than the 3 pack at £129

www.amazon.co.uk/TL-WPA4220KIT-Powerline-Broadband-Configuration-UK/dp/B01LXOZ4EN/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&s=computers&keywords=powerline+to+wifi&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1605138879&sr=1-1

Powerline wifi - plug the powerline base into a power socket near the router, attach to router via ethernet. Put the other device in a power socket in the extension. You have full speed wifi in the extension.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 12/11/2020 00:00

Get the powerline adaptors. It's using your mains circuit to send the WiFi signal.

CruelAndUnusualParenting · 12/11/2020 17:02

Powerline can be good, but it depends on the wiring and other devices on the mains. The plugs seemed to have a fairly high failure rate.

I replaced a powerline setup with a mesh. The BT Mesh was great when working, but had a lot of problems. I now have a trouble free set up with TP-Link Deco mesh. Last time I looked a Deco M4 3 pack was £100 on Amazon.

TooTrueToBeGood · 12/11/2020 17:10

If I understand correctly, you have ethernet cable running from your router to the new location? If yes then all you need is to connect a basic wifi access point (AP) to it and set it up.

I bought a £23 range extender Plugged into wall socket, pressed a button on the virgin hub to sync it and voilà my wifi went a lot further. Very happy
