How do you work out which device is using the most wifi

New provider and we are still dropping signal

How do we work out if one of our devises is using an excessive amount?

I’ve wondered the same.
I thought each device got a certain % of the max, so if 4 devices were connected and you had an 80mb download capability (at least on paper ) then no device could use more than 20mb.

I think it depends on how ‘intense’ any device is too, downloading a game or live streaming is going to use up that 20mb all the time whereas looking at MN is short bursts of traffic.

Maybe the WiFi router has some information on each device?

I’ve asked that the family don’t switch YouTube to 4K resolution if they’re watching regular videos (or anything else tbh )

If you have a BT Smarthub then access the smarthub managerthen select My Devices then next to each attached device you will see upload and download amounts.

Personally my smart tv uses 5 timed as much as anything else.

Just started with Virgin

I wonder if the one drive is the problem

Unless your router monitors user bandwidth it's not as easy as you might think.
Are you actually dropping the broadband /internet connection or is it a poor wi-fi connection around the house. Is the connection dropping at certain parts of the day and how many devices are trying to connect?
Not quite sure what you mean by one drive problem.

Threeisnotacrowd · 24/09/2020 01:07

Lots of devices wouldn’t drop your connection.

They might max out your WiFi. In which case you need to invest in better WiFi.

Broadband and WiFi are two completely seperate things.

One (wifi) is your responsibility.

The other (broadband, or the actual link for the isp to your house) is your providers responsibility.

Pt2
As cdtaylornats said, the biggest hogs are Smart TVs. If you have one of these it's best to try and connect via net cable rather than wi-fi.

If you think that the wi-fi signal is a bit suspect you can get free apps to check it. WiFi Monitor for Android phones for instance can check the router's wi-fi strength.

If you’re with virgin it’s just a ‘feature’ of their service - best get used to it.

They’re the only provider we can have in our house and for years we’ve contacted them about the connection dropping. Sometimes they change the router sometimes they do nothing. You can almost time it.

Your router will have a function to check what is connected and how often it’s pinging ‘home’ which might freak you out a little. I second connecting smart tv via Ethernet cable.

My daughter's boyfriend uses an ethernet cable to his pc to stream and the drop outs are so frustrating

We just left NOWTV because of drop outs on the promise of a stable line.....ans a better upload

I wondered if my 'one drive- was updating to often and I am considering backing up ro a hard drive instead

I doubt it's your One Drive causing the problem. You can always set it to not run at start-up.
Out of curiosity, have you done a speed test. It seems a bit strange you've changed provider and still have the same problems.

KatyMac · 24/09/2020 20:07

In the middle of being told (by the engineer because it wasn't working) that this problem will never happen with this provider, just look at the speeds that are showing....the display showed teeny tiny numbers and his mouth dropped

Oo he said that shouldn't happen - what's going on? So it wasn't my imagination or the devises we were using (as he had logged everything off to try something) or the wifi (as there was an ethernet cable)

There was just no broadband!

He was shocked rigid

WRT to speed we can have 30 one minute and 2 the next and the upload speed is non-existent

lljkk · 24/09/2020 20:14

so did he fix it?

KatyMac · 24/09/2020 20:17

Nope doesn't have a scoobies! He had listened to me ranting for 10 minutes, think "Ive got a right one here"

He is coming back tomorrow with a "proper" appointment rather than the "customer is an idiot and cant turn the box on" 15 min appointment

Has your neighbour got a really old TV? Smile

KatyMac · 24/09/2020 20:37

Jeremy Vine was talking about that!

I hope not

To be honest it is the broadband not the wifi (as the very nice man found out)
