Thinking of buying DS (20) a laptop for his birthday. Essentially it needs to be able to do normal stuff plus be OK for watching films and playing games. Can anyone recommend anything that can do that and is good value for money?

Watching with interest. Sorry no advice but I'm shopping for a new one soon too. Smile

It's the playing games bit that can send the price up. What budget do you have?

Pobblebonk · 22/09/2020 12:27

Difficult to say - ideally maximum £500.

Argos do a decent spec laptop at the top end of your budget
www.argos.co.uk/product/5029976, but it's not a gaming laptop. It will probably do games that are a couple of years old in low resolution and Fortnite but not the latest demanding games.
Gaming laptops from Currys and Argos (with a decent graphics chip)seem to start at around £650.

That's a really good spec on the Dell and a good size hard drive (ssd) as well for £560. Strangely that didn't come up earlier when I checked the Dell outlet site.
That's the problem with laptops tanstaafl . You can add more ram or change the hard drive but that's about it unlike a desktop.

Thanks everyone. DS has now clarified that he wants mostly wants it for the usual stuff including watching TV programmes and films, plus some classic games, but it doesn't have to be able to cater for high-tech stuff. So something like that Dell or the Argos one sounds ideal.

Yep, absolutely fine. The Dell would be better for gaming, and has a bigger hard drive. I couldn't see any mention of warranty but I should hope for 12 months.

I guess you're talking laptops (which all come with keyboards).
How cheap is cheapo? To be honest you'll be looking at around £375 for what I would consider a usable machine. Cheaper machines tend to be lacking in storage or processing power or they are Chromebooks
