iirc the identity of the mn poster that posted the link became known to her employer. was that because she confessed or because they/the photo website person tracked her down?

in other words....if I post a link to a website and people start clicking on it enough to arose the interest of the website owner can he work out who I am? [paranoid emoticon]

The photographer who owned the website realised he was having a huge surge in hits and tracked the url down to Mumsnet.

Think it all depends on the software you have. Eg My work website records number of hits but not URL's so no way of tracing.

But some can.

If yuo are worried I'd get yuor thread deleted

I'm not bothered about him tracking it to mn. I'm a bit bothered about him tracking it to me personally ie the rl me. can he do that? or will he spend lots of time wondering who on earth hatwoman is?

Are you easily recognisable from your profile/previous posts if he does a search?

FrannyandZooey · 30/09/2007 09:15

change your name if you do it and never post under that name again

however if there are a limited amount of suspects in thw world and you are one of them, your mere presence on this website is going to eventually give you away if he is committed enough to finding out who you are. We give away a lot more about ourselves than we realise, on here

hatwoman · 30/09/2007 09:36

ok so there's no techy way of finding out? he could only find out through deduction? if he was dedicated he might be able to suss me but I doubt it.

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 30/09/2007 09:45

I don't reckon there is a techy way, no

bumping for techy people, though

I reckon that humiliating someone on a public website does tend to make people dedicated to finding out who did it, though

you aren't just going to say "ah well never mind"

What thread with highly entertaining photos are we talking about, did I miss it?

Isababel · 30/09/2007 09:52

Why is it important to get in such trouble to post a link?

Please remember that we are still in GF times when we can not speak freely at the risk of having Mumsnet sued for that, so please, whatever it is... consider if it's worth it!

Desiderata · 30/09/2007 09:58

... and take your hat off . That'll get him off your scent!
