How to save a YouTube video

Some videos have been posted on YouTube of my uncle who died recently and I'm trying to figure out how to download or archive them in case they're ever taken down so we don't lose them. Does anyone know the best way to do this please?

It's not permitted so there is no built in option.

Google YouTube downloader: you copy and paste the url onto a download website and it spits out a video file for you to save.

It’s not very straightforward though there are a number of ways to do it. Try googling. YouTube don’t offer this easily (as they want you watching content on the site). But it is possible.

The way I usually do it is via a bit of software called VLC player (it’s a free video / media player). It allows you to play a video not only from your computer itself, but also via a network stream - ie over the internet. If you play the video in VLC player this way, you will be able to see the web address where the video is actually stored (ie the URL of the video itself, the one you use on YouTube is kind of an indirect link).

With this “true” link, you can then go to the video in your browser directly (not via YouTube), and your browser will give you the option to save it.

Lots of info out there on this so go have a google - it is definitely possible though. Good luck :-)

What about approaching the source and asking them for the file that they uploaded originally? I tried to download a video recently for a school lesson and got a kick from my IT Dept. They told me to approach the source and that was successful.
