Laptop or tablet predominantly for drawing

I would like to buy my son a new laptop or tablet for his 18th birthday. He loves drawing and is hoping to go to art school next year. He will still need capability to write essays etc but he would really love something he can use for drawing and would like to use a pen not a mouse.

I'm really not a big fan of Apple and I'd like to buy something that is still going to work in 4 years time.

I have a maximum budget of about 1000 euros but really would like to pay less.

Could anyone advise me, I'm a real dunce at this kind of thing and want to make sure I buy correctly.

Dd uses a laptop with a pressure sensitive drawing tablet. That is probably the best solution.

Make sure it has a SSHD rather than a conventional hard drive.

Well, if you're dead set against Apple's iPad (and I'm afraid it's the clear leader in this field unfortunately) then you could try Microsoft Surface Go if you want Windows, or the best Android ones are the Samsung Galaxy Tab range.

Remember to budget for a stylus - for the iPad, it's an extra £100. You should also budget for a keyboard (£100ish) as well, those base prices can very extremely misleading.

Dd is an architecture student so runs a lot of graphic/drawing software and has a Razer, think it’s the Blade 15 model. Most of her cohort have the same one.

Sorry, don’t think you can draw in the screen with the razer one.

All the Surface laptops have come down with pretty poor reliability stats, which is a shame as they would be otherwise be ideal.

The current iPad (normal or Pro) is by far and away the best answer though, and also the most likely to still be working in four years.
