Headset with mic for working from home

I'd like to buy a headset with a microphone for WFH but there is a lot out there and I don't know which to get. The cheaper ones have all sold out a Argos and it's mainly gaming ones. At the moment I am using my iphone earphones which work ok but get uncomfortable after a while from having something in my ear.

Does anyone have any recommendations please? I am working from my MacBook air and both USB ports are taken up with a proper keyboard and mouse which leaves the headphone socket for connection.

Thank you in advance.

I use Microsoft lite ones. I also got a USB port splitter so I can have more things going in so you're not restricted. I also have headphones, a webcam and mouse so needed more. Hope that helps.

Do Plantronics headsets work with Macs? thats what we use. Also Mac keyboards have extra USB sockets.

Thank you both.
I have been looking at Argos, as it is still open within the Sainsbury's near me. The Microsoft ones have unfortunately sold out. :(.

I have a pair of Jabra. I've found over the years you need the mic bit and to be comfy for long periods good padding on the ears. So don't scrimp but also you don't need to spend £££££. I think mine were £50

this one? look in the Laptop and PC headset section.

If you need more USB try this hub

In my experience sound quality is much better from a purpose made headset, it can get wearing in long meetings if someone is faint/has buzz and echo sounds. HTH

I bought a Jabra Evolve 40 Stereo Headset for PC, laptop, mobile phone, smartphone, softphone from Amazon.

It's has a dual connection so you can connect it with a USB to a computer but also a headphone jack so you can connect it to a phone if you lose your internet.

Pretty much any USB headset will work fine with the Mac - sounds like you have a wired keyboard so there's a pair of USB sockets in that you can use.

If you have any phone earbuds with mics, those will also do.

If you have a quiet enough office location, just the mic and speakers on the laptop are surprisingly good.

Thank you for your comments.

Spoon, one of the reasons why I want to get a headset is so that I am not having to lean closer to the mic on my Macbook to speak as it's not very good.

The USB ports are taken up with the mouse and keyboard, which leaves the socket that requires a jack connection.

I shall have a look at all your suggestions. Thank you.

just, checking are you using an Apple keyboard with the extra USB ports? It was months before I noticed them.
Also we've has this discussion at work, you can get a multi modal wireless mouse that doesn't need a USB port.

My work has supplied me with headsets by both Jabra and Plantronics , they seem fine and fit well.

I see, hope one of the other options suits you. I've found using a wireless mouse was the best workaround.

xsquared · 06/04/2020 10:27

I shall look into Jabra and Plantronics, although I won't rule out gaming ones either since asking a colleague.

Thanks again.

I'd say get a gaming one if you just need a good mic, gaming headphones are designed to be used with voice chat features, sure some are better than others and will break quicker but if its just for the short term then I wouldn't care to much

mpow noise cancelling headset

plus a usb splitter

SpoonBlender · 06/04/2020 22:01

Get a little USB hub and plug mouse+keyboard+headset into that.

If it's USB-A (the old rectangular one) www.amazon.co.uk/Anker-4-Port-Macbook-Surface-Notebook/dp/B00Y25XFGK?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

If it's USB-C (the smaller rounder one) smile.amazon.co.uk/Anker-Premium-Adapter-MacBook-Chromebook/dp/B07H4QWWTY

You can get cheaper, down to a fiver or so, but Anker are good quality kit.
