Constant inappropriate emails in Junk

SC10 · 01/02/2020 06:41

For the last few months I have been receiving up to 33 emails at a time in my Junk with explicit sexual content, plus ones about Bitcoin/ gambling/prostate issues/Medium Amanda etc. They seem to be they same things that keep being sent as I have come to recognise the titles now although there are often some different ones as well on the same kind of themes.
On hotmail there isn't a function to block these senders and it has been going on for so long that I wonder how/if it will ever stop and it is now starting to get me down. Can anyone suggest what I could do please?

They're going into your spam folder so you don't need to do anything. Just don't look in there. I rarely look in mine unless an email I'm expecting hasn't arrived.

Blocking won't make any difference, they'll be coming from multiple , constantly changing sources so as fast as you block one another will appear in its place.

It's a hotmail problem and the refuse to listen. You used to be able to use Rules to automatically delete emails bit that doesn't work properly now. Lots of my emails go into junk when they shouldn't.
Hotmail should be stopping these at the server, but wont. Other email providers manage to do it, so not sure why hotmail cant.If I block a domain like opensubscriber it should be blocked and not go into spam, but they have taken that facility away..
There are many posts on the Microsoft message boards but they refuse to do anything about it.
They also must be breaking gdpr and Us rules by allowing these emails.

Thank you so much for replying, I really appreciate it although feel a bit disheartened hearing that Hotmail won't do anything to help me.
(Regarding not looking in my Junk and just ignoring them I would find that a concern as I do get some proper emails in there as well as the awful ones, for example I was arranging to return something I'd bought online from Habitat this week and the emails from them were going into my Junk rather than into my Inbox for some reason).

bruffin Hotmail aren't allowing them, they're spam.

SC10 yes, it is a nuisance when genuine emails get wrongly directed, I'm not sure why it happens. I would guess that it's false flag - the emails contain features common to spam, and then the recipient has to tell the algorithm that it's not.

I can understand why you don't want to see the horrible emails, but short of not using email that isn't really possible. Spammers are going to send them and (hopefully) they are going to end up in your spam folder. I use Gmail which has a search function so if I need to look in the spam folder I can search for the email 'm hoping to find. If Hotmail has a similar thing maybe try that?

They are allowing them as they know they are unsolicited spam and should be able to to block them at the server, and should at least allow to ban certain domains. I used to be able to but they changed it.

I understand what you are saying Saskia and the advice you are giving to just ignore etc, I have always had a few spam emails here and there but because recently I am literally getting 30 - 40 a day every single day it made me think that it was a problem in isolation that could hopefully be solved and I could just go back to normal again.

SC10 There are often 'waves' of spam as the senders change their tactics and the anti-spam algorithms take a while to catch up, or when a new spam factory emerges and send out huge waves of emails. Hopefully, what you are seeing now should abate and the levels go back to normal. It is annyong though.

bruffin blocking domains won't help, the senders routinely add and drop domains to ensure they aren't blocked. As fast as one is blocked they will move to another. Seriously, Hotmail cannot be blamed for the emails sent by third parties. They will be doing as much as they can to prevent it reaching you but there really are limits to what they can feasibly do.

]You need to read the Microsoft help pages there are very long discussions on the subject. They can do a lot more than they are doing now. They changed the way rules work etc about 2 years ago and spam exploded then. If I divert through gmail then those spam dont make it through their server.

InOtterNews · 10/02/2020 12:30

I have the same problem. Before data regulations came my email address was shared and now I get 100s a week. All too hotmail. Tried blocking senders but they still keep coming with a slight variation in the email sender address.

I had to resort to setting up a gmail email address and use that for everyting now. I still have my hotmail address as there are still people who use but I only check in once a month - to empty the junk folder mainly.

goldpartyhat · 04/04/2020 10:17

Once these type of emails start coming they breed and share your email address. Would it be feasible to get a new email address from google mail? Just be careful in the future and only give your email to legitimate websites, sometimes you make mistake and give it to a dodgy site without thinking, and that opens the door.

uglyswan · 04/04/2020 10:30

Are they all from appspot domains by any chance? If so, you can report them to google (support.google.com/code/contact/cloud_platform_report). Select App Engine and give them a couple of addresses as examples.
I've also installed Thunderbird, whose filters work slightly better: go to tools, create a message filter for emails containing things like HotDateAsian, Prostate, SexyBitcoin or whatever, and run that on your spam folder before you check it for legit mails.
