Window's 10 not updated properly

Does anyone know how to rectify an update gone wrong ? Laptop tried updating itself last night and the new update hasn't installed properly so now its going around in a loop trying to fix its self then failing. I tried typing the error code displayed into the Windows help centre and it said on there to do a hard shutdown and reset the whole thing but it gets to 40% and then says its unable to reset itself to factory. Also tried putting it into safe mode and accessing the drives it says 1 drive is failed but before i can click to uninstall that drive it kicks me off and goes back into its loop of trying to diagnose and fix the problemHmm anyone else had this ? Ita a Toshiba Satellite if that's any use and i only bought it in October from a seller on eBay refurbished i paid £109 so is it worth paying to get it repaired or just getting a new one ?

Also tried restoring it to a previous safe point but it didn't have one and it won't stay in safe mode long enough for me to create one

The drive failure is the important thing here - if the laptop was from a commercial seller and it's still under warranty just claim on that.

Definitely not worth paying someone to dick with it, they'll charge more than £109 for replacing the drive and reinstalling Windows.

It didn't come with a warranty as it was a refurbished model. Can i uninstall and reinstall the drive that's causing it if i get back into safe mode ?

The drive itself is damaged, and Windows installer can't write to it. It's like a record with a scratch. Depending on the laptop it could be fairly easy to replace yourself... what model Satelllite is it?

Its a c50d-A-138

Good choice! That model's ridiculously easy to replace the hard drive. Also gives you the chance to get an SSD, which will make it much quicker (unless it was refurbed with an SSD already).

- one screw to take off the L shaped panel, and you can pop out the old drive and pop in a new one.

Buy an appropriate SSD - I've been installing BX500's into machines lately, they seem pretty good. Pick the space you need here:

In order to get Windows on it, you'll need a a16gig USB stick and access to another Windows computer, then go to
www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 and download the Media Creation Tool, run it, and it'll write the Windows installer onto the USB stick. Pop that into the laptop and use 'method 2' from (press F12 at bootup time to get a menu) to choose to boot from the USB stick. Then you'll get the Win10 installer and you're away!

Tch. Bad autolinkifier, no biscuit. Here's a working SSD link:

So i just buy one of those drives from amazon take the back off replace the drive and then download Windows 10 to a usb from another computer and install on mine ? Sorry im not very techy 😂 could i download and install a previous Windows or does it have to be 10 ? I preferred Windows 7 or 8 i find 10 to be quite hard to use and i dislike having to purchase a disk player seperate on their app store along with other things that previously came included

Yep, you've got it. If you set off do a Windows emergency reinstall, you can do the above - it's not bad at all. The drive can only go in one way :)

Earlier Windowses are rather harder to get onto it - 7 goes out of MS support this month so don't touch it, 8 I viscerally hate so can't recommend. 10 will work much better on that laptop than 8.

If you must go for 8, here's a how-to:
www.lifewire.com/how-to-install-windows-8-or-8-1-from-a-usb-device-2626228 - it's a bit more faff than 10 unless you happen to have a Windows 8 CD and a USB CD drive lying around, in which case it's super easy. You'll need to do the F12 "boot off CD" still.

I think all the apps MS removed from Win10 are available free from the store, you shouldn't have to pay for any of them. The search in store is dogshit though, best to ask Google instead then use those results to find the right thing in store.
