Any gamers about? Ds wants twitch for mods....

Ds wants twitch for minecraft mods and Iv said no to twitch as I don’t like the look of it. He has access to YouTube although it does have parental settings on there and twitch doesn’t seem to? (I’m not naive to think YouTube is ‘safe’ of course.)

Is there anywhere else he can get these ‘mods’ he’s so desperate for?

You can't get twitch mods without twitch.

So what additional functionality is it that he actually wants? There might be other mods which offer it, depending on what 'it' is

Wonderingwhyme · 02/11/2019 10:19

Tinkers construct he said? What ever that is.

Bumping.

Are you sure he said Twitch?

Twitch is a streaming platform specifically tailored to gamers. It actually has stricter terms of service than youtube and would be just as good for him if he plays Minecraft. However I don't think it offers mods for games.

As for the mods, he can get those from a third party client such as Tekkit or FTB which would need to be installed on their PC. Though typically modded minecraft requires higher specs.

Sorry only just seen you have replied @SDMS . I keep saying no twitch but he is adamant it’s for mods and says he can’t get them anywhere else. This two things you mentioned, are they just websites? Are they save for kids to be on? I’m really not very good with technology! The laptop we have is high spec gaming laptop so I think it should be ok?

Twitch is a streaming website, in very basic terms just like Youtube, but live and more tailored to gaming. As such it is pretty much just as safe since all channels are constantly moderated to make sure no one does anything nsfw that violates their ToS. Anything popular that your child would most likely look at would definitely be safe as streamers of that caliber rely on the platform financially and literally can’t afford to be banned. Check it out for yourself since theres something for everyone on there.

In very basic terms, games such as Minecraft have the capacity to be modified/modded, provided that the player has access to ‘mods’. They will do things such as add new features or mechanics to the game to provide an even more enjoyable in-game experience, for example one modpack could add industrial tools to the game and another could add pokemon etc. Most instances of modded minecraft make use of a third party client or a seperate launcher which you launch the game from, rather than the original launcher provided by Minecraft (it’s worth mentioning that if this all seems rather technical I can assure you it is widely popular and licensed by Minecraft themselves, IMO modded minecraft is better and more played than the original vanilla game).

Twitch is a website he can just access online. For minecraft mods he’ll have to download them from whatever page distributes the specific mods or use a launcher to enable them. The only mods on Twitch are the people who moderate the channels’ compliancy with Twitch ToS.

Thanks for explaining. He’s 13 and quite tech savvy so I know he will know how to work it out, I have parental controls on the laptop and he can’t download anything I haven’t allowed.

I have issues with him with you tube and have to be careful with him so I don’t really want to add anything else similar which twitch seems to be. So the other two things you mentioned in your first page, it’s just a website or I google it and down load it like an app on the laptop?

Can't you just install forge? It should be on the latest release, I don't know the ins and outs as I haven't played minecraft or set up my sons in a very long time, but they're in abundance of tutorials on YouTube (one of its perks!)

ClaireDendie · 01/01/2020 11:22

Then when forge is installed you can set up all the mods available (which is most)

SDMS · 01/01/2020 11:44

I wouldn’t have a problem with my kid being on youtube at 13 if I’m being honest, but I guess that’s your choice and I can only advise.

FeedTheBeast (FTB) and Tekkit are examples of Minecraft launchers. A game launcher is an application made to launch/start a game. These launchers can be downloaded from online as .exe files (applications) and then from there used to download separate modpacks from within the launcher. If your son knows his stuff then he can just point you in the right direction.

Wonderingwhyme · 01/01/2020 12:11

No he is on you tube, I meant I have issues when he’s on it, watching stuff iv said no to etc. Ok thanks I’ll have a look and see if I can do this!

My 13 year old seems to live for his minecraft, I say yes to most things for it. He runs his own server as well as having a variety of mods. He spends most of his time on PVP games/servers(DH understands it all and digital safeguarding is part of his job so I know DS is safe). He started off using forge as DH researched and thought it the best way for him.
I think it is much better for him than a lot of the 18 rated games his friends play which we don't allow. Minecraft in all its forms doesn't seem to produce the rage that fortnite does so he is calm, happy and although the PC is in the living room he isn't disturbing anybody.

Wonderingwhyme · 01/01/2020 12:39

Yes I want to encourage mine craft for the same reasons as he loves fighting games and I’d rather mine craft for as long as possible!

So.... ds said tekkit is a scam and doesn’t work..... and feed the beast he needs twitch to download the mods??

OP posts:
SDMS · 03/01/2020 14:57

hahaha your son is smart. I used tekkit last night, it’s really not a scam. I think he’s messing you about 😅

Wonderingwhyme · 03/01/2020 15:23

He’s a pain in the arse.... I have no idea with the tech... he knows this!

Iv reluctantly got twitch, he reckons he can get the mods off it and then delete twitch.... any idea if that is true???

OP posts:
SDMS · 03/01/2020 16:02

Well you can’t delete twitch. It’s a website.

Wonderingwhyme · 03/01/2020 16:05

I mean the account ...

OP posts:
Wonderingwhyme · 03/01/2020 16:17

He says twitch doesn’t have the mods he wants anyway!
