Did you pull off the piece of plastic or plastic clip (whichever applies) before installing it?
Pull it out and have a look.

Is it a genuine HP cartridge?
Did you align the cartridge when you put it in?
Have you tried the suggestions in the HP website ?

Gone2far · 29/04/2019 22:23

I found this on a different HP page:

perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

Disconnect the power cable from the printer while the printer is still ON.
Disconnect any other cables if connected the printer.
Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
The printer should be directly connected to the wall outlet and not to a surge protector.
Reconnect the power cable to print and the printer should power ON by itself. If the printer doesn’t power ON then please manually power it ON.
Please perform the following steps from this HP document to fix print quality related issues:

Solution six: Print and evaluate a print quality diagnostic report to troubleshoot defects. (Please perform the sub steps under this solution).
If the issue still persists then please try installing another black cartridge and check.

Apply large hammer, buy new printer, rinse and repeat

Catzpyjamas · 29/04/2019 22:44

Tbf, I paid £30 for a black xl cartridge and I could have bought a new printer for about £10 more. Hmm

Because printers are like cats, you think you own them, but secretly they see you as a slave and love to see you beg them to do something.

Does the print head need cleaning?

mineofuselessinformation · 29/04/2019 23:07

Ok, so now get some kitchen towel (preferable as it won't shed fibres) or some tissue and damp it.
Wipe it over where the ink should come out - usually at the bottom of the tank on the cartridge.
If that doesn't work, take it back.

Gone2far · 29/04/2019 23:08

tbf I feel like going for the hammer option.
I've physically cleaned heads with kitchen towel using instructions from a youtube video. no luck
Now in my tools I've found 'clean ink smear', so I've told it to do that. Just testing.
No
will try your suggestion catz in the morning (when I don't feel like fetching the hammer)
thanks all

Gone2far I feel your pain😡

I bought and used ink head cleaner kit (oh the glamour!) and I have to say it worked brilliantly and brought back what I thought was a dead printer. Trouble is I don’t use my home
Printer that much and the ink thing had just solidified in the jets.
Good luck op - save for this
Victory I find printers infuriating.

Buy a laser printer. You have to pay a lot more up front, but the cartridges last for ages and never dry out or clog. I would never go back to an inkjet.

Ink for inkjet printers costs more per ml than vintage champagne. You can buy another printer for next to nothing, but they come with "starter" cartridges that last a fraction of the standard cartridge.
