TV/SKY remote controls not working

the batteries are fine and the remotes light up but all of a sudden they are barely working. The TV remote won't operate the TV and the SKY remote is failing too. Nothing has changed in our house and my dh thinks some equipment has been set up nearby which is causing interference. Can this be true? What could cause this?

How do you mean barely working?

Clean the sensors - both on handset and device, slightly damp cloth (not dripping wet!)

Hi Nannynick

All controls are clean with fresh batteries. Over the past few days there have been long periods when all 3 controls (2 identical SKY and 1 TV control) have not worked or barely worked. Then, a few hours later all are fine and working well - then again, all not working. It is very strange.

Very odd. Wonder what could be interfering with the IR signal.

Any new toys in the house, such as remote control train, car. Any new devices, such as Laptop, Mobile Phone, any new lights - particularly Fluorescent / Energy Saving Bulbs.
Try to think of any object that has come into the room, which wasn't there prior to the trouble starting.

Have your neighbours experienced any trouble - could be worth asking, even though it may seem silly. I would expect interference to be very local, so not affecting neighbours - after all, remote controls do not work over a long distance, or through solid objects such as walls. Would therefore expect your neighbours to have no problems - but if they do, then some big interference is occurring, from something.

Try logging the times when the remotes are not working - see if there is any pattern to when you notice that they stop responding.

Seems odd - but as more than one remote is affected at the same time, then sounds like it is some sort of interference, rather than a IR receiver being at fault (though do check for spiders!)

Thanks Nannynick
I have already asked our neighbours and there is nothing new there or here. I wondered if the humidity could affect things? Oh well, they are working today so everyones happy...till next time!
