Hi I am doing conditional formatting in excell & when I copy the conditional formatting it doesn't change the cell I am referring to (ieb2 becomes b3 becomes b4 etc)

What am I doing wrong?

What do you want the cells to do??
Copy the cells, and then when you go to the cell you want to paste, right click on your mouse button and press paste special, it gives you a list of paste options.

Hmm - I think I am still doing it wrong

If I copy A12,A22,A32 in to columc B I get B!2,B22,B33

But instead it's doing the same reference over & over again

ignor that the multiplication sign got confused with the bold thingie

DO paste special and check the copy formulas only box, does that work???

Katymac · 25/06/2007 15:38

Nope

Have the cells you are copying got an 'absolute' marker on the reference? Think it's either a $ or a ! symbol in Excel.

What conditions have you got set - is there a reason in this bit of your settings to make it format the wrong bits?

Can you describe a bit more about what is in each column/what it is meant to be doing?

Katymac · 25/06/2007 15:46

The formula copied fine it's the conditional formatting that deosn't copy

If is less than B3 make it red
If it's equal to B3 make it yellow
If it's greater than B3 make it green

But it always says B3 I want it to chnage to B4, B5 etc

have you fixed it accidentally somehow? (dont actually know if you can fix conditional formatting btw)

Try having a look at the entry in the conditional formatting options and look at the cell you are comparing against. If you have typed the cell ref in you might not have been added in the $ signs to make it 'absolute' so it compares against the same cell.

I think if it says something like:

Cell value is more than $b$3 it should work - if you leave out the $ signs it moves the comparison to the cell you are on.

I am confused - if you always want it to compare against the same cell use the $ if not don't! If you are stuck still feel free to email me a copy alienears @ hotmail .co .uk - off to swimming class now, but back later.
