Geeky stuff

Anyone who has experience contributing to open source projects on github want to offer moral support?

There’s a project I’d like to add a feature to. I asked if they had it and they suggested it would be a good contribution. I figure I might as well give it a go. I don’t feel like the actual writing bit is beyond my skill set I’m just scared by the process and having people judge my work and stuff. Would be nice to have someone to talk to who can tell me it’s fine, no one is going to hate me for submitting code etc :p

I've made a few contributions. It's been a bit of a mixed bag in that some were accepted without changes and some were completely rewritten for various reasons, but I was never abused or insulted.

A lot of projects are very responsive and encouraging, but there's always a risk that you will hit the project run by someone with an overinflated ego and no social skills.

As they sounded positive when you suggested it, I would go for it. Just don't expect your first attempt to be accepted immediately. Be prepared to revise it to meet their criteria for acceptance.

It also occurs to me that if the project runs a mailing list or forum you can see how other people have been treated.

Funnily enough I was thinking of someone else.

before you give in, read the code and see if your style matches theirs. see if there is a style guide anywhere

I guess you must have read the issues and feel confident to contribute.

I'll assume you know how to use git effectively.
get your branch ready for a pull request. use a linter comment where you can.

and your good to PR.

answer questions in a timely manner, be neutral be polite, don't be prescious. Treat it as a learning thing

and go for it.

it's an excellent feeling seeing your PR accepted into the develop branch.

But it may not happen your first go, but keep on trying
