Idiot guide to wireless routers?

Before I start I should warn you that I'm not very techincally minded so apologies if this sounds ridiculous! Anyone give me a basic guide on what to do and buy? Virgin want £75 to move my cable connection so they suggested I buy a wireless router instead. If I do this, is this ALL I need to buy? I'm confused because whenever I look at wireless routers online they suggest i buy an adaptor as well and I'm not sure if I need one. If so, it makes it less cost efficient as an alternative to Virgin's £75 so any advice would be much appreciated!
I've seen this www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductI D=2324

as long as you are only using 1 pc- the router is all you need.
we have virgin too...main pc connects via modem and router using wires- then we have 2 other pcs which are both set up to use a wireless adapter...

i bought the netgear router as i had another router before and got in such a muddle...so this time i stuck to what virgin recommended- though i did buy mine off ebay- cgi.ebay.co.uk/Netgear-WGR614-802-11g-b-WiFi-Wireless -Cable-DSL-Router_W0QQitemZ220120709446QQihZ012QQcategoryZ44 997QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem . which is half the price of retail etc.

bear in mind that there are 2 types of router- mine is for when you don't have cable tv- if you do then you need a router that connects to the set top box (ASDL i believe????)

that ebay router is a refurbised one...mine works brilliant...

often people buy the wrong one (as i did to start) and return it to places like argos etc...who then do not put it back on the shelves but sell them on to people like this who re package them and check them and sell at cut price.

are you using cable or broadband ?

We have broadband and have a netgear router/modem that is realtively easy to set up - cost about £50 a year or so ago).

I know nothing about cable - sorry.

oops - the wireless bit - each pc needs to have a wireless adapter - either a usb one you plug in or a card you plug into the motherboard inside (not as bad as it sounds - honest !).

Recent laptops may already have a wireless connection built in.

if you need a usb wireless adapter, can i recommend www.aria.co.uk - I got one there for less than ten pounds and it was so easy to install and use

ClutterJunkie · 13/06/2007 12:44

just thinking- the difference between routers is not the set top box/modem...but whether you use a BT line or not.

BT line= ADSL router

Thanks everyone, I bought a wireless router from Ebay (can't remember what one and thought that would do it but did a bit of research and realised I would probably need an adapter as well so ordered one today - my PC is quite old now so will likely need one. Thanks for advice, I may be back when I try to install
