I am a bit stuck as i have always had norton. but a couple of weeks a go I got a virus and norton didn't get rid of it. now what do I do. I have notorn for another 100 days. do i give up on it and keep avg. or go back to norton(oh i also downloaded windows defender which got rid of the spy ware)

Vote for AVG here - hate Norton

SpacePuppy · 31/05/2007 19:31

CA's e-trust antivirus is also nice, runs quietly in the background and don't try to take over! home2.ca.com

bump for more votes

Norton is bloated and takes up far too many system resourses for the job its supposed to do. And it doesn't do the job all that well either.

AVG is very good, updates itself regularly and its free. I have been using it for years and think its one of the best anti virus applications out there, and I have tested a fair few. Always go back to AVG though

2shoes · 01/06/2007 17:22

ok so norton is going but will it go NO

OP posts:
MunnziesDH · 01/06/2007 18:05

Whats the message you get when you try and uninstall it?

2shoes · 01/06/2007 18:20

it asks m eto put the disc in which i do then says there was an error. but think it micht be ok as I seem to have lost the anti virus just have the internet security and anti spam

OP posts:
MunnziesDH · 01/06/2007 18:30

You shouldn't need to put the disk in to remove Norton. You need to goto Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs and select Norton Internet Security then click Remove. It should remove it then ask you to reboot your machine. Then you can install AVG anti virus and anti spyware.

SoupDragon · 01/06/2007 18:33

I replaced Norton with Kaspersky. He also said that Norton can be a b*gger to uninstall although it didn't prove to be a problem with mine.

RubberDuck · 01/06/2007 18:38

Keep AVG - it's brill AND free. It gets regular 100% viruses in the wild awards and it doesn't mess up your whole computer system like McAfee and Norton often does.

2shoes · 01/06/2007 19:13

i did do it on the add and remove bit.

SpacePuppy · 01/06/2007 19:30

Where do you get a free version of AVG?

RubberDuck · 01/06/2007 19:35

AVG Free Edition

RubberDuck · 01/06/2007 19:35

Or here: free.grisoft.com

CarGirl · 01/06/2007 19:42

Does AVG free have spyware protection? If not is there one I can get from somewhere?

RubberDuck · 01/06/2007 19:46

Spybot Search and Destroy - free antispyware

MunnziesDH · 01/06/2007 20:12

Spybot is actually rubbish. AVG anti spyware is free. You get all the features for 30 days then you can either buy it or put up with the fact that you have to manually update and scan for spyware (as I do)

As for the Norton removal problem try here for the official way to remove it and let me know how you get on. If it still wont work get back to me and I'll give you a few more options to remove it.

2shoes · 01/06/2007 21:51

MunnziesDH it's all gone!!

OP posts:
2shoes · 01/06/2007 21:53

any ideas norton stopped them so i didn't even see the ones on mn. i am now running avg and windows defender

OP posts:
MunnziesDH · 01/06/2007 22:05

Change your browser to Firefox. Has built in pop up blocker and loads of add ons for pretty much everything you can think of. Plus its more secure that Internet explorer. And if you use Outlook I'd change to Thunderbird for that as well. You get get Firefox here and Thunderbird here They are both free as well!

You can download themes for Firefox so that it looks like Internet Explorer. Still each to his/her own I suppose lol
