Does anyone know any good ones? DH and I live an exciting life Wink and have been trying some brainteasers out on each other. I appear to have run out now but I want some really tricky ones to get him with tomorrow if anyone can help!

OP posts:

Pimlico shares a c with France

Dinosaurdiva · 28/03/2018 18:30

The bunny one- it's only c that could know the answer unless b and c are the same. If b and c are the same colour, d knows it is the other colour. If d says nothing then c knows he is not the same colour as b.

DamnWhyAreAllTheUsernamesTaken · 28/03/2018 18:49

Correct!!

Mrsmorton · 28/03/2018 19:41

Doh. Dollis Hill.

DadDadDad · 28/03/2018 20:09

The border between two countries can only be crossed via a footbridge. There is a guard post at one end in the country where Polly lives, and she is desperate to escape to the other country. From observation, she knows the following:

It takes 20 minutes to cross the bridge.
The guard comes out of their post every 10 minutes to observe the bridge.
If the guard sees someone escaping from this side, he will shout at them to return or face penatly of being shot.
If the guard sees someone approaching from the far side, he will shout at them to turn back with the same penalty.
Running (or any climbing) across the bridge is not possible because it will cause the bridge to shake enough for the guard to hear it.

How does Polly escape?

concretesieve · 28/03/2018 20:20

The footbridge is set over a river, which Polly swims. She hides under the bridge when the guard comes out.

Eveninties · 28/03/2018 20:21

Should polly walk backwards??

Abigailthespiderinthehat · 28/03/2018 20:28

Please explain what the number one is all about..

concretesieve · 28/03/2018 20:29

Mine was a guess - I'm sure Eveninties is right Star

DadDadDad · 28/03/2018 20:34

I said that the bridge was the only way to cross, so no swimming. She doesn't have to walk backwards, but she needs to walk to the middle of the bridge and then turn round just as the guard appears so it appears that she is coming from the far side. The guard will then send her to where she wants to go!

DadDadDad · 28/03/2018 20:35

The numbers one - it's about the shape of the numbers. 8 = 2 because it has two "loops" in the digit, 4 = 1 because you can fill in the triangular bit of the digit. 3 = 0 because 3 is an open shape with no closed loops.

Abigailthespiderinthehat · 28/03/2018 20:40

I'd never have got the numbers one in a million years! And all the tornado France pimlico stuff?

DadDadDad · 28/03/2018 20:43

Sorry, I think MrsMorton and I got carried away on the London Underground stuff. I'm seriously impressed by her ability to solve them.

For example, Dollis Hill is the only station name on the London Underground which does not contain any of the letters of the word FRANCE.

Liaoyang · 29/03/2018 07:47

A doctor and a boy were fishing. The boy was the doctor's son, but the doctor was not the boy's father. How is that possible?

DadDadDad · 29/03/2018 07:58

I don't think MUMSnet will find that one hard to solve. 🤔

gabsdot · 29/03/2018 08:26

A man lives on the 20th floor of an apartment building.
Everyday he gets the lift to the ground floor and goes to work
Every evening he comes home, walks up the stairs to the 5th floor, then gets in to the lift to the 20th floor and goes home.
Why?

QueenOfAccidentalDeathStares · 29/03/2018 08:42

gabsdot The man is very short and can only reach up to the 5th button.

sirfredfredgeorge · 29/03/2018 08:53

QueenOf whilst that riddle is similar to the short man one, it doesn't work, since he still needs to press the 20th floor button - the short man one only gets the lift up to the 5th floor then walks. Sometimes it adds the fact its raining to let him get to the 20th.

I haven't got an answer...

DadDadDad · 29/03/2018 09:14

Because when it's raining he is carrying an umbrella which he can use to reach the 20 button.

That's the third time an umbrella has been a part of the solution on this thread!

QueenOfAccidentalDeathStares · 29/03/2018 09:32

ahh... damn didn't read it close enough.
doh!

QueenOfAccidentalDeathStares · 29/03/2018 09:34

Another oldie:

In the middle of winter, a woman is found dead in her bed, with multiple stab wounds in the stomach. Soaked into the sheets is a massive amount of blood, along with blood drops on the carpet. On the side table beside her bed, there is a glass full of water mixed with blood. What was the murder weapon, where is it now, and how was she killed?

QueenOfAccidentalDeathStares · 29/03/2018 09:36

Which month has 28 days?

DadDadDad · 29/03/2018 09:38

Can you determine the missing number in this discombobulating sequence:

3, 3, 9, 3, 7, _, 2, 4, 16, 8

QueenOfAccidentalDeathStares · 29/03/2018 09:39

6

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 29/03/2018 09:40

Queen - weapon was an icicle which has now melted in the cup.
