Noooooo! Don't do it!

Unless they have changed the way they work it is a file sharing website and you are risking a writ from the BPI.

fryalot · 18/03/2007 21:30

dp says: it's only £15 and there are things that you need to check - you're opening yourself up to viruses, etc. It can be quite risky.

Squonk says: that never stopped him. He uses it all the time!

pirategirl · 18/03/2007 21:32

i have it, its ok, have always found stuff i need, but I am sure there are many who would think it not specialised in more obscure stuff.
I like alot of old indie stuff and thats harder to find.

I'm not very up om it all so someone may suggest a better site?

Didn't have much time to reply to this last night but please check out Limewire and Bit Torrent fully before using them to ensure that you are not enfringing on any copyrite laws. My DH used Limewire (without fully being aware what he was getting involved in) and ended up with a writ suing him for £10,000, although the case was eventually dropped do not under-estimate the stress that something like this could cause you and your family.

addle · 19/03/2007 16:03

mrs spoon, could you tell me roughly how that happened to your dh? i've downloaded it for my dd, having tried to find out via google what the disadvantages are, and I'm now really worried... many thanks

happystory · 19/03/2007 16:06

well from my (admittedly limited) knowledge of it, my teeange ds got a nasty virus through it....

MrsSpoon · 19/03/2007 16:27

addle, this was a little while back (perhaps 18 months or more) so they may have changed their way of working. Basically my DH got excited at the thought of free MP3s, signed up but was unaware that he was file sharing all the music he had on his computer (most of it from CDs that we had bought and paid for that was simply on his PC for him to listen to) with the world wide web. He thought you could switch the file sharing part of the programme off. One day we received a writ for £10,000 from a bona fide firm of solicitors, he was being sued by the BPI for copyrite infringement, they had screenshots from his PC and everything.

However Limewire and Bit Torrent may have chanted their way of working since then. We would never use them again and currently pay a subscription to Napster and don't get any PC problems with it.

MrsSpoon · 19/03/2007 16:28

"chanted"??? I mean 'changed'.

addle · 19/03/2007 21:31

hello mrs spoon,

thank you very much for the info. how scary. I guess I should email them to check.
