I have bt wireless broadband, and both a Mac and a pc. The pc is connected okl, but still won't access lots of websites about 1 in 3. As I prefer to use the Mac it doesn't normally bother me, but as part of an exam I'm doing, I need to access a particular website and the pc won't let me. The problem is that the software on the website I have to use only works on internet explorer, which you can't use on a Mac.

Does anyone know what I do to the pc to stop it blocking websites? My step-dad suggested it might be the firewall, but it's switched off. It can't be the broadband as I have not problems with the Mac.

HELP - I need to pass this exam.

How is it not letting you, does it say the page isn't found or something similar?

Glassofwine · 15/03/2007 16:57

Yes, it comes up with a standard page saying the page cannot be displayed. The strange this is, in the case of the site I need the home page comes up for a milli second and then the page cannot be displayed thing.

do you have cookies enabled on the PC? If not, or if you are blocking other things, that could be it (badly written website if so) - try lowering the security level in the "internet options" of internet explorer

Glassofwine · 15/03/2007 17:06

I had already lowered the security on internet options to low. How do I find out about cookies? Sorry, I'm more of a Mac person.

in the internet options it is under "content" ~(next tab over from Security)

Katy44 · 15/03/2007 17:13

Can you give us the URL?

exbury · 15/03/2007 17:17

Good idea - that way we should be able to rule out a fundamental problem with the site.

Glassofwine · 15/03/2007 17:27

www.envq.co.uk

I've put in on trusted sites in explorer, restarted the computer and this time a pop up box said it was a trusted site, did I want to allow. I clicked yes, as the usual thing happened, ie. home page for a milli sec, then nothing.

I can get into with no problems from the Mac, but am now at a stage where I need explorer, which won't run on the Mac.

Aghhhhhhh

OK - running out of ideas here - I can see the home page fine.

Turn off your pop-up blocker? (tools->pop-up blocker)

SenoraPostrophe · 15/03/2007 17:33

are you running internet security? what does it say when you tried to access it?

SenoraPostrophe · 15/03/2007 17:36

I mean what does the page cannot be displayed message say at the bottom? does it say 404 not found?

SenoraPostrophe · 15/03/2007 17:38

have you tried moving the pc closer to the wireless router?

Katy44 · 15/03/2007 17:40

Can you show us the text the page displays?

Glassofwine · 15/03/2007 17:48

Thanks for all your help - still no joy. I've disabled pop-ups.

I put security to low.

Yipeeeeeee

I had a brain wave while feeding the poor neglected children and looked to see if there was a more up to date version of internet explorer. There was, I loaded it, all ok now.

Thank you all, you are wonderful
