Geeky stuff

My dd (8) has some lovely ideas about designing her own cat related Web page - I'm making vaguely encouraging noises but all the while alarm bells are going off in my head about. .. everything. And I'm a bit rubbish. Any ideas?

I don't want to dampen my dd's enthusiasm. She'd love to build her own app or Web page for cat loving contemporaries. In my head I'm thinking Legal? Safeguarding? Limited tech? Is there anything child (and parent) friendly we can start with. Please point us in a useful direction.Grin Thank you .Smile Wink ( says my dd)

She could use wix.com to make a free webpage. Its all very simple to add what you want and to build a page up. I think you can set up a webpage about anything, so I am sure it's legal as long as she does not say that she is a cat expert and gives dodgy advice!!

What a lovely idea for her to do.

Thank you. We'll take a look.

Oh bless her. Dd is 11 now but still loves cats more than anything else in the world.

I had to be very vigilant when she started googling "kittens/pussy cats" etc.

I think it's a lovely idea too, maybe she could do a blog that is set to invite only or something?

sparkysparkysparky · 19/04/2015 18:43

Yes. I agree on the dangers of certain terms. Because I know nothing (not even next to nothing ), I like the idea of "invite only". Is that possible?
We had one computer which appeared in my final year at school. I think I drew a square . DD uses kodu and (is it called?) Scratch at school. I'm both impressed and anxious like most parents.

Or maybe a blog? I think tumblr might be a good option?

cdtaylornats · 22/04/2015 01:10

Sorry it took me a while - I knew I had seen this somewhere

kidswebsitecreator.com/

She might also have fun with

barclayscodeplayground.co.uk/

Is it annoying as this thread title?

VenusRising · 22/04/2015 01:35

My sisters' child found out all about her fathers secret hook up and porn website habits when she started using the search terms pussy cat. Turns out she got into his account and was having conversations with (gay) hairy truckers.. It's how he was outed.

It's a nightmare out there if you don't supervise carefully. Install nanny software and create a whitelist of sites.

Be careful she reveals no information or photographs that will link her or her school or her location. No photographs which have original names either, call them pix1 pix2, not 'Flossie on the common' or anything identifying like that.
No references to school uniforms, and no pictures of friends.

Better be safe than sorry.

sparkysparkysparky · 22/04/2015 06:21

Thanks Venus.

Sorry for offending your sensibilities, Elizabeth. Why don't you look elsewhere instead of bothering ?

Thank you , cdtaylor , for taking the time to find the links.

I would beware of Tumblr. There is a lot of stuff on there (sex/ self harm/ GIFs of age inappropriate films etc) which she could run across by accident as she got used to the website. I certainly have!

sparkysparkysparky · 22/04/2015 07:09

Yeah. I'm not sure tumblr is the thing. I explained to dd why "pussy" is not a kid friendly search term. In as age appropriate a way as I could manage.

Could you direct her away from a website and into a book? Maybe scout around and see if there are any competitions at libraries etc for creative writing? She could write stories, facts, include pictures and keep a diary of behaviour for 'publication' in a really nice book from a good stationary shop. I would've loved that as a child.

sparkysparkysparky · 22/04/2015 07:23

Thanks Rolodex. We have scrap books and notebooks full of her stories and cut out pictures. She loves creative writing and we make up stories together ( my mil does it with her too). She's also into tech and I don't want to hold her back if we can do it safely together

As well as the issues mentioned above, make sure she's aware of copyright issues of any pictures she uses. Fine to post her own pics of cats, but if she grabs images from across the web and posts them with no acknowledgement or check on terms of reuse, she may get scary cease and desist messages or worse a demand for fees (there was a thread about this the other day.)

sparkysparkysparky · 22/04/2015 07:35

Thanks, girlonlanding, that's a good reminder
