Is this some sort of scam? A local paper has published a big article claiming that thousands of people in my area have been found to have their information on a list which criminals are selling on the dark web, talking about identity theft. The end of the article gives this url.

I had a look. You put in your email address, they send you a mail with a verification link, and when you've verified you get another email showing what data they have discovered on this list which is being touted on the dark web.

There are also links to a page on their site which will sell you software to protect you from further thefts or alert you to further thefts etc.

The email also tells you to delete it after you've viewed the information Hmm

Once I saw they just wanted to sell me software I kind of dismissed it all. There is some info on me, but it's only name and address which is public record anyway, and I believe the Electoral Roll is being sold these days.

What did interest me was their instruction to delete the email. Why on earth would you have to do that? Are they trying to make it all a bit Mission Impossible? Why isn't their email self-destructing?

Obviously there's no space in the url. Not sure how that got in!

I dont think its a scam, as such.
Its not being flagged as a suspicious site, seems legit enough.
I'd say they are trying to sell their unnecessary software just.

Your local paper has an enthusiastic reporter! Thousands of people in your area could have left the box unchecked to allow their name and address details in the electoral roll to be harvested. It doesnt necessarily follow that peoples bank details and credit card numbers are being traded on the dark web.

The requirement to delete the email just adds to the mystique of their operation.

There are security sites where you can enter your email address / logon account details to see if it has been compromised, for free, so this is probably someone making a few quid off that idea. haveibeenpwned.com/

Thanks; and yes to the thousands who left the box unchecked on the electoral roll. It's all a lot of hype over nothing imo.
