Is your second home next door?

What are you wanting, data or voice?

What mobile networks work at your second home?

What wifi networks are visible at your second home, such as neighbour.

Is there a landline at your second home, if not could you install one? Cost is going to be quite high though, but could look at low cost carriers.

Cindy - cost really depends on what choices there are.

Most firms offering broadband and which can handle ordering a phone line (not all of them do), will charge from 0 to 125 (or thereabouts).

I'd never recommend BT Broadband (whatever they call it these days) because I generally consider it overpriced.

Things to consider -

  1. more rural the location, less choice of ISPs (Sky, TalkTalk, and firms using TT "behind the scenese") don't serve all rural locations

  2. whether the internet service will actually be fast enough for what is needed? (eg streaming video may be impossible, if the speed is below 2.5 Mbps, or with significant quality degradation)

  3. how important is it to have / how much time likely to be spent there?

I've a number of websites regarding getting online, and assist a specialist in hi-fi/ home theatre, when he is after networking ideas for farmhouses and places in the middle of nowhere :) Will be happy to do some checking over the weekend if you wish (must go out for a 16:00 appointment now though).

Sorry, my BT Broadband comment seems disjointed - they often offer free installaton but monthly line rental and higher than some broadband fees make it questionable whether you save money in the long term... just don't have a setup fee (of say 50 quid) for the phone line to find at the start.

Some ISPs have UK call centres, and that can greatly reduce stress if there's a problem!

Thanks network guy. It is a rural location. It is needed 5 days a week so important. There is wifi there but it is very weak and if lucky enough to work it can take 30 mins to download a page. I have a laptop, would a dongle boost the existing wifi signal?

I've sent you a PM. There are several options for extending the range of a wireless network, but initially it would make sense for you to do a speed test (not using wireless, but plugging the laptop direct into the router with an ethernet cable if you have one).

Getting some results from *> SpeedTest.Net

Incidentally, Cindy's questions are valid too - when you say no phone service, I'm guessing no mobile phone service on your network, but it's just my guess :)
