Is ridiculous, right?

OP posts:
MirandaWest · 12/09/2014 11:51

Yes. Very.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/09/2014 11:54

Yes. Context?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/09/2014 11:56

Mind you £5+/MB is pretty standard for roaming data....

SouthernComforts · 12/09/2014 11:58

My mobile phone bill. Over my data limit by 35 measly MB. Ive challenged it and stopped the payment. It's being recalculated but I just got that sick feeling that it could be right.

for storage costs?

SouthernComforts · 12/09/2014 11:59

Just on 3G, not abroad or anything.

What does your contract say?

SouthernComforts · 12/09/2014 12:04

I don't have a paper one, I just got a SIM only contract over the phone. I was sent a welcome letter with cost per month etc but not a contract like I get from the actual store. T-Mobile.

OP posts:
SouthernComforts · 12/09/2014 12:06

The person on the phone told me to cancel the payment, Is that encouraging?

If they have been unclear about additional charges that may apply you've got a good argument.

MirandaWest · 12/09/2014 12:33

How many days were you over your limit for? I have a sim only deal with t mobile and I seem to remember something about a charge per day if I had used more than my amount of data. Although maybe it was a total charge - will try and remember.

SouthernComforts · 12/09/2014 12:39

No idea. My handset was barely working for the last two weeks before I upgraded to EE. The final Bill from T-Mobile should have been £15 not 300.

Vote with your feet. Tesco Mobile do capped contracts so you can't go over your limit.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 12/09/2014 12:40

Roaming data is a lot more reasonable than it used to be, in the EU at any rate - it changed in July

Used to be £1.99 for 15MB with O2 - now it's £1.99 for 24 hours unlimited. (& with Vodafone I think it's £1.99 a day to have the benefit if all your UK allowances - O2 still charge extra for calls & texts)

I realise the OP isn't about roaming, but having used data roaming in May at the old rate & then in July at the new rate I'm delighted about it!

SouthernComforts · 12/09/2014 12:41

For comparison, I've had this 4G handset for 3 weeks and used 300mb so 35mb can't be much browsing time can it?

OP posts:
SouthernComforts · 12/09/2014 12:42

I use WiFi 90% of the time too.

OP posts:
TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 12/09/2014 12:43

No, 35MB is nothing! The 15MB I used on holiday gave me about 10 minutes browsing iirc.

SouthernComforts · 12/09/2014 12:43

It is my final bill There.

MirandaWest · 12/09/2014 12:46

35mb is very small. Am failing to find the information I'm trying to on their website. When I had 1gb data on a sim only contract I kept coming near to 1gb data as it got nearer the end of the month and I'm sure I asked what would happen if I did go over my limit. Would help now if I remembered.

Even if you'd used all your data on the first day of the month so were "overdrawn" the whole month that would be nearly £10 a day which is obviously ridiculous.

SouthernComforts · 12/09/2014 12:58

Thanks for looking for me. That would be incredibly unlikely. In 10 months I've gone over my data once. My bill was £5 more that month.

Now I've had an idea though! I'll try and see my old bills online and see what amount I went over by last time to compare.

I just had a look here:
ee.co.uk/help/accounts-billing-and-topping-up/terms-and-conditions/t-mobile-terms-and-conditions/terms-and-conditions/price-plan-terms-and-conditions

24 month contract £1/ day for going over data allowance

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/09/2014 19:32

Is it possible you did not cancel your contract in time so that it rolled over and that is a cancellation fee?

SouthernComforts · 13/09/2014 14:09

Thanks. Nope I upgraded early to EE. Upgrade fee was 9.99 which I paid upfront. All other fees were waived. My number was transferred the day after and the old phone was switched off. I've looked at the itemized bill. It was 35mb of data used in one go on one day. The charge for it is £287.

I'd tell BBC "You and Yours" or Which? mag (Consumers Association).

That's an outrageous penalty for going over the allowance. I use up to 2000 MB a day on one of my (unlimited) Three contracts.

I thought Three was expensive (when I had a 15 GB monthly limit on a USB dongle, when they charged 10p per MB for any usage above the limit), but in your case it looks like 8 pounds a MB.

If you have an Android phone, I can recommend an App called "Plan Monitor" which tracks minutes, texts, data (mobile network) and data (wi-fi). It will disable the mobile data if you set the limits and warning/cutoff right.

I disable data on some of my phones (with PAYG SIMs) but have two mobiles on Three with unlimited data (13 quid and 15 quid - the second allows tethering for laptop, desktops and other items to share the mobile connection).

SouthernComforts · 10/10/2014 15:07

Update! Got a revised bill for £7 yesterday. Phew.
