We don't watch much telly but it will be for streaming iplayer, amazon prime, netflix type things plus X-box. I know I want full HD.

I have a wii - do I need a SCART connection on the TV for that or can you get SCART to HDMI convertor cables?

I don't want 3D, do I?

Do I want back-lit LED or what?

Feeling helpless...

  1. You can buy HDTVs with SCART input. Using a SCART-HDMI adaptor will allow you to connect via HDMI inputs but obviously, your Wii won't suddenly start delivering a HD picture. Also, a cable that switches form analog to digital isn't ideal. Your best bet for connection is a Wii component cable.
  2. We have only ever watched 3D for illustration purposes. On our last TV, it was dreadful. On our current one, it is watchable. But we really aren't into it. We would happily sacrifice it.
  3. How your LCD screen is lit is not a priority. Edge lit is cheaper than full array, but this is unlikely to be the feature that sells a TV to you unless you are spending thousands.

If you tell me size and budget, I'll tell you which model to buy.....

Grockle · 09/09/2014 23:08

Thank you very much...

Criteria are:

Full HD
Screen no bigger than 32 but ideally 27/28
Smart
At least 2 HDMI, some way of connecting Wii (scart or component)
Wifi

3D Bonus but not necessary

LG & Samsung seem to get better reviews than other brands.

Budget - originally under 300 but might go over if for a really good investment

m.richersounds.com/#!/product/LG-28LB490U that's the tv I would recommend for you

Grockle · 10/09/2014 11:26

Thank you. The one I liked was LG too but then I read lots that said Samsung is much better...

It's not like the old days when you went into Rumbelows and picked the right size television off the shelf and went home!

Oh, the one you recommended isn't full HD but thank you.

Samsung are always a great buy. Apart from our main TV (which was always a Samsung until this newest one), all of our little ones and computer monitors are Samsung.

The smart side of things is a changibg field. You may find using ChromeCast / AppleTV to make it smarter is more upgradable longer term. Consider what smart features you want, many smart systems do not have apps/players for all video-on-demand services.

nannynick · 10/09/2014 16:57

That Samsung looks good. See if you can test it instore somewhere.

Graciescotland · 10/09/2014 17:10

If you have a John Lewis nearby they stock Samsung tv's for testing, we have a samsung smart tv, they come with a five year guarantee as standard from JLs which was handy when we needed a screen replacement a year down the line.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/09/2014 17:12

We've got an LG 4K tv and the picture was better than the samsung. But it's all subjective and you have to go and see what you think.

Ferguson · 14/09/2014 16:06

But there is no point in FULL HD on anything less that 32", and even that is small. Do you only have a tiny room? HD ready, and you will see no difference below 32".

3D is probably a gimmick that is waiting to die, as there have been so many problems. It may try again in ten years or so!

We have always favoured Panasonic, which at one time were highly rated, but I'm not up-to-date with current models.

LED, contrast and brightness are also important. Sound quality is often lacking, but you can connect to Hi-Fi etc.

I recommend getting a 4K tv, they are in world of their own, amazing! Always go Samsung as well. They look the best in my opinion - try tvfactory.co.uk
