Dumb question about Spotify.

I'm thinking of signing up to spotify premium for a short while. Will the music I download in that time still be accessible on my devices after I have stopped paying the monthly charge? Not sure how it all works.

No, you don't download as such (although not sure how offline listening works).

It's like BBC iPlayer in a way, where you watch but don't download.

You have the choice of downloading playlists and songs to listen to offline, spotify needs to connect to the internet at least every 30 days, once the 30 days is up you can't listen to music streaming/downloading untill it goes back online

Would I be paying to listen to music but only as long as I keep paying monthly, then if I stop paying I don't even have the stuff I downloaded previously to listen to offline? Sorry to be thick!

Yes, it's as you described. Stop paying, lose it. You're renting it not buying it.

Snowbell · 15/09/2014 22:19

Thanks for the clarification. It's expensive then. Don't think I'll be bothering.

Yes it's not a purchase service, it's more of a rental if that makes sense. You don't download stuff individually on it, it would be really easy to save a giant playlist with thousands of tracks on and then stop paying the charge if that were the case.

If you're looking for music to download the mp3 section on amazon is quite reasonably priced.

PepeLePew · 15/09/2014 22:27

I think it's expensive depending on how you use it. It's made me massively more experimental in what I listen to - I know read a review, download the album and listen to it several times before deciding I like it, or deleting it. The children can have an up-to-date chart playlist which has always got new things added to it. I definitely get more than £9.99 a month of value out of it. If it vanished that would be a pain but as a way of getting lots and lots of new music, most of which I'd never have listened to otherwise, it's great. I've got friends in the music industry who share playlists and recommendations, and I make old style mix-tape playlists for people with all sorts of stuff on it which then gets shared around. And I can always have a new running playlist whenever I want without getting bored.

I'm not on commission, promise. Smile

I am using Google Play Music. its the same price per month and you can download music and play it offline. I really like it, though only been using it for a month Wink You can also cancel whenever you want.

BertieBotts · 15/09/2014 22:42

I agree Pepe. It's worth the money for the use you can get out of it. But if you aren't going to use it in any great scope then you're better off spending the money on actual downloads/CDs instead that you can keep forever.

If you think of it like a premium radio subscription service, with no talking or ads and they will play absolutely anything you want. Literally anything save for a select few artists who refuse to allow the rights to their music.

If it had Sunshine Smile by Adorable, I'd be happy. I have to listen to it on YouTube as my brother accidentally sold my vinyl copy when he sold all his reggae records years ago!

Just to confirm, you can sign up for Spotify premium at the moment with 3 months free. Also you are correct that the key benefits of Spotify premium is that you can download and play offline (account login required every 30 days). But if you cancel premium you will NOT lose your music or the playlists you have created. You can still listen to them just not offline and you will have an advert played occasionally. But you can resubscribe to premium again at anytime to carry on with offline music. The music quality is also better with a premium account but you will only notice that with a good set of speakers.
