Fed up with current ereader, but on't want Kindle, so are Boox/Cybook any good

I've got a Kobo Glo which keeps crashing on me, and it's the second one I've had, so I'm thinking the software must just be crap. (Various forums indicate I'm not the only one).

I really want an e-ink reader (to spare my eyes), which lights up (so I don't disturb my small children), and which will accept my current library, which is mostly epub (loaded by Adobe Digital Editions, if that makes any difference).

I've gone through Which? and have investigated lots of the self-lighting ereaders on the UK market, and just can't bring myself to buy a Kindle, what with the licensing issues, "not playing well with others" and so on.

I've now discovered Bookeen's Cybooks, and Onyx's Boox, which sound quite like which I'm after. However, they don't seem to be sold in the UK, and I'm rather reluctant to buy blind. Has anyone got one, and can tell me whether the software is stable and the light is good?

Thank you!!

I have a Nook Glowlight, got it in February this year. No problems so far, I've bought books from Nook and from other booksellers, and have also downloaded stuff from Project Gutenburg with no hassle (DD is currently reading through the Anne of Green Gables books, courtesy of PG), though you do need to download through a PC then load onto the Nook. It's not difficult.

The only problem was when I was in the US, and accidentally blew up the charger. Nook is Barnes and Noble, so has an American plug with a UK adapter on it. I failed to notice this, and tried to plug it in with my UK adapter on it as well - bad moveBlush. The Nook itlsef wasn't damaged though, just the charger cable.

Go for the Nook Glowlight, it's great, it will accept ePub.

Oh yes, and you can use a Nook for public library ebooks.

Yes, I use my Kobo Glo for library books, and that's great!

Okay, I'm due to go to John Lewis tomorrow, so will have another look at the nook.

I've just been torturing myself with Reading The Internet Sad, about installing a Kindle app on an e-reader, meaning I can "redeem" the few Kindle books I've actually bought...

Gah.

Thank you for your sensible counsel. Smile

Just back from JL, and I must admit that I do think the Nook deserves the bad press it's had for its light... It was uneven and blue even at the highest intensity. Pity it was next to the Kindle Paperwhite, as well. Anything looks crap next to a Kindle, but of course there's the Kindle's selfish nature putting me off!

After being stumped by that expedition to John Lewis, my Kobo has actually been behaving itself, so I think I will stick with it for now.

For reference (anyone else having the crashing/ freezing problems), I've stopped using the "sleep" cover, and do NOT allow it to sleep; I only turn it off completely. Perhaps my problems were from the battery drain in "sleep" mode. It could also be that Anna Karenina was too big a file for the poor thing to handle! Another great reason not to read War and Peace!

Thanks for all the advice. I may need to refer to you again someday, though I hope not!
