Boosting wifi in another room

Hello - sorry if this has been covered a million times before. We have a good internet connection, and wifi is fine throughout most of the house except for the kitchen, which is diagonally opposite the location of the router. We have an internet radio in the kitchen, but unfortunately the signal is too weak for it to be used at the moment. Is there any clever way of boosting or relaying the internet signal to/from the kitchen? Bonus points, if it can be done cheaply and easily.

yes there is and I am going to use very technical terms. It's a plug in thingy in one room where the router is and a plug in thingy where the signal is weak.

It uses the electricity cables to pass the signal through thick walls etc. I can't remember what it's called.

Try going in to Maplins and say "plug in thingy".

mabelbabel · 05/06/2014 11:08

That sounds perfect, I need a plug-in thingy! (do you know if it works?)

Yes it does work - not perhaps as well as a good signal in the first place but it does work. My mum had to get one as her flat has very thick walls.

But now that I think about it, the first one she had didn't have enough "reach" (technical terms again!) because in her flat it's a long way from the router to the main space with weak signal, and she had to get a more powerful one which works ok.

Wifi booster / repeater.

Ooh the plug in thingy is great! I think it's called home plug? You want the one that uses the house's wiring not a wireless one - we used to have a wireless one but it was insanely complicated to set up, broke often and was generally a bit shit.

I've got a TP link powerline. You plug one into a socket by the router and attach it to the router with a LAN cable, then plug the other one into a socket in the from where you want the connection.
Yiu can choose one with wifi on the second plug so the room will have wifi or one where you can connect equipment to the plug with a LAN

We had no signal at all the the back of the house and this workes perfectly.

Try something like this.

[http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-WA850RE-Universal-Extender-Configuration/dp/B00AHXXJVW TP-Link Wifi Extender]]

I'd recommend buying it online via Amazon or another e-tailer so you can send it back within 7 days if it doesn't work for you.

I had one and it didn't always work. Intermittently the signal would just drop then come back again.

Ooops, damn missed the [

Try this link TP-Link Wifi Extender

Thanks for all the help. I've had a look at the circuits in the house, because I wasn't sure that the kitchen sockets were on the same circuit. Sure enough they seem to have their own circuit which I can switch on and off at the circuit board. So I think that means I need something that doesn't work through the power lines. Any suggestions? Is this going to be stupidly expensive?
Thanks!

Ooh, have just seen this thread. We have the same problem - my dh has no internet connection in his office at front of house. would one of the TP Link powerline adaptors work? They're not wireless, are they? Is there a wireless version, so we don't need to buy a new router for dh's office? thank you!

peggyundercrackers · 20/06/2014 09:35

you need a powerline adapter and another router to act as a repeater. plug the powerlink adapter in and plug the router/repeater into it, simple really...

Beehatch · 20/06/2014 09:39

Ours is just a little box that plugs in in an intermediate room. It picks up the wifi signal and relays it. Works perfectly, don't think it cost much.

mabelbabel · 20/06/2014 09:45

Beehatch can you find a link for the repeater thing? So that I know I'm looking at the right sort of thing? Thanks again!

Sorry don't know exactly what ours is (DP got it), but look into these kinds of things

mabelbabel · 20/06/2014 10:17

Cheers.

BT sell quite a few different kinds of these products - have a look at the links below, this is just a selection though and not them all.

On offer this week is the TP-Link powerline WiFi Extender, with 2 WiFi access points. Good piece of kit.
